Full Version: Stuck between the state of dream and reality

Hi everyone. yes.gif I wanted to take a time to discuss my experience with you which was the most unique out of all the experiences I've had in my life. I've had only one before in all of my life. I hope I can get some useful feedback from you explaining the reason behind my experience and how it should be interpreted, or simply dismissed as a natural state of dreaming in an REM state. It happened about 4 days ago during a night. I think I have fallen asleep and was dreaming about trying to enter a city by jumping on flying couches. Don't worry, I'm currently seeing a psychiatrist for that. Anyways, after I reached the city, I found myself waking up in a bed in the same apartment building where I'm living right now. Although the apartment was different, the building was the same as the one I'm in right now. I remember all of a sudden realizing that what I'm seeing is in fact a dream and not reality. Most of you are aware that while in your dreams, you are not aware that it's a dream. It seems to be very real to you and only after you wake up, then you feel that it was only a dream. After realizing that the dream was in fact ONLY a dream, I attempted to explain that to the people who were in my dream. There was a black man who was eating a lollipop (one of my fantasies rofl.gif ), who was talking to me and some other people I've never met before also. I remember telling them that what I and they are currently experiencing is not real but is a part of a dream that I'm having as I speak. They asked me, "Then why does it feel so real to us?" I answered that the reason it feels so real to them is because they are part of the dream as well, while I am only dreaming about this so-called reality. It's very hard to explain because the result is that reality and dream got mixed up together for some reason. Either way my explanations were futile and the inhabitants of my dream??? remained skeptical of my theory of dream/reality fusion. Additionally, after realizing that I was aware of myself being in my own dream, I became very concerned that I would not be able to wake up because I was already awake in my dream. The idea of being trapped in my dream forever with my physical body lying on the bed really frightened me. I remember telling another person in my dream to wake up and go over to my house and wake me up from dreaming. I don't remember what that person looked like. This idea was probably influenced by one of the Simpsons Halloween episodes where Willie was trying to kill Bart and Lisa while they were sleeping. If you saw that episode, then you would know what I'm talking about. If you haven't seen it, feel free to tune in to Channel 11 (Fox) Monday thru Friday at 7:30 pm, 8:00 Central. Remember, for every UM member I refer to the channel, Fox will pay me $5 dollars. In conclusion, the good news is that I was able to wake up and the bad news is that I still haven't been able to figure out what exactly happened on that fateful rainy night. This is why I turn to you, my faithful UM readers and fellow chatroom members, with hope that maybe one of you will be brave enough to light the candle and disperse the darkness surrounding my mystery. The darkness is weighing heavily on me with the confusion and despair of not being able to comprehend the meaning of my experience. Is it a sign from above, is it a paranormal experience, is it a chemical imbalance in my brain, is it a normal occurence, is it dozens of other explanations that exist? I am hoping that one of you can provide me with a solution to my predicament and a method to avoid future occurences of unexplainable and deeply disturbing phenomena. I thank you for your time. Please take care and I hope that you won't find yourself in the same situation I did. original.gif

when ur dreaming and ur aware of it thats called Lucid Dreaming. It happened to me many times and i was able to alterate my dream, which means i was able to consciously decide what will happen next in my own dream. Anyway i think this is what happened to you. You had a lucid dream. Its nothing to worry about, ur not mad, ur not having paranormal experiences and ur brain works just fine thumbsup.gif

Thanks Anukis. Now I can cancel my brain MRI appointment yes.gif Your explanation does make sense and I'm happy that you were able to alterate your dream. I hope I will be able to do the same. Even better, I hope I don't have lucid dreams again unsure.gif Thanks again.

It feels weird to be aware that ur dreaming, like ur awake but in the wrong reality so to speak. But if u just keep calm and keep in mind that its just a dream and you will wake up eventually, it could be fun, to make up ur whole dream.. You can just dream out anything u desire exactly like u want it to be. Its a bit confusing i know laugh.gif . Its been a long time since it happened to me last tho. oh well...

You're more than welcome Tiger23, I'm glad i was of help happy.gif

Yes, I agree with the nice replyer before me. What is sad though Tiger, is that you got scared that you won't wake up. Think like this (I guess): it's as likely or more likely that you will wake up from a lucid dream than from a normal dream. you will always wake up of course, but in a lucid dream you will be able to control it, when to wake up. When I get into a lucid dream and want to wake up I think or do something that the lucid dream world doesn't seem to like, it could be reading something, a sign i spot or sometyhing else. I then know it's something like a port out of it if I hear a buzzing noise. Just panicking ,jumping up and down (in the lucid world) with an intent to wake up would probably work as well. Mostly I wake up in a paralyzed state. This is because the controls of my body preventing me from sleepwalking is out of order a bit and is still on while i'm awake I guess. I then can watch and use my eyes but nothing more. I then always close my eyes, since I don't want to see something there when I am temporarily paralyzed. Some people say that they see strange things, shadow people walking against them, when paralyzed and eyes open, but I have during the 2-3 seconds not seen anything more than what's normal, the room or wall next to the bed.

This is ASP Awake during Sleep Paralysis, also normal. Can be scary at first, though I am used to it now.

But why would you see a psychologist for dreaming about jumping on flying couches? or plan on a brain mri for having a lucid dream?

I've never heard of anyone staying asleep just because they couldn't wake up. The most dangerous thing I've read was from someone who said they had an out of body experience that ended abruptly a couple of minutes later, gasping for breath with stale air in their lungs. Apparently they forgot to breath during their experience. But the breathing instinct took over again.

I was dreaming once and someone did something real weird I think because I figured out I was dreaming. I told the people in my dream I was dreaming and they kept telling me I wasnt dreaming so I sat on the floor until I woke up. It was weird because I thought if I lucid dreamed I would try to fly.

i had an intereting one this morning it wasnt lucid but it was confusing. my alarm clock woke me up and i turned it off, and i dont think i set it so i can remember laying there and i must have dozed off, because i started dreaming that i got out of bed and set it for a later time, possibly a false awakening but probably just a normal dream of me setting my alarm clock. its so confusing between that and reality the only way i knew it was a dream was because it had some extra button. really weird
