Just because it can't be proven a fake or hoax doesn't default it to being real.
But I wouldn't turn down a night in the Amityville house either way!

Even though I don't believe in demonic possession, The Exorcist always scared the wee out of me. I saw it on tv when I was only a kid and I have been scared to death of it ever since. Any type of possession story gives me the supreme willies and I love it.

I had heard it was a "hoax" as well, however I met some people that were involved in making the movie, in which it was said the story is absolutely true. The family that was terrorized for years, up and moved once everything was "cleaned out" but come to find out, it followed them to I think CA, where it took another two years to exorcize to the point where NOW it is finally gone. You would be pretty brave to spend a night there..LOL..

"The Exorcist" would most definately be the one on the top of my list. I can't think of any other that comes close either.
I can still see the scene in my head where she spider walks (back bends) down the staircase to her mother, ugh! UGH! Scary as hell.

I think Poltergeist scared me more, (that's a movie, though.) Then again, I saw it for the first time when I was about 7 and I couldn't sleep for weeks, and then again, I'm not Catholic so exorcism stories aren't as scary to me as hauntings.

'Poltergeist' made me chuckle, rather than be scared - but it had great moments - like the toys swirling around in the room and the old paranormal investigator's face...
'The Exorcist' is definitely gave me the creeps, as did 'Salem's Lot', but the one film that really unsettled me when I was small was 'The Haunting' - based on Shirley Jackson's novel 'The Haunting Of Hill House' - had Julie Harris and Russ Tamblyn and was in b&w.
The door to the bedroom scene... yikes...

JN, which family are you talking about? George and Kathy Lutz spent 28 days in the home and I haven't heard of another family that lived there being terrorized for years.
Both of them have since passed away.
Back to the topic, I was never scared of "The Exorcist" movie, my mother took me to see it in the theater when I was 6 years old because I'd seen the commercials and wouldn't shut up about it. She thought that I would be so scared I'd never bother her again about scary movies. Truth is, she left just after the scene where Father Marrin(sp) comes in, and I watched the rest of it by myself.
It was chilling and still is.
The book of "The Exorcist" scared the crap out of me (the part where she slithers across the floor and licks the ankle of the assistant

) so did "The Amityville Horror" book.
I've heard so much about "The Changeling" that I'm going to order it right now from Amazon.
Maybe they'll have it.
I've read "Ghost Story" and it was a really good story. The movie was good too.

It was considered to be a hoax - though that photo of the boy with the glowing eyes is really scary and it does look like the lad who had lived there.
The Exorcist never scared me either, though I'm a right coward at scary movies - I think it had been hyped up for so many years before I saw it, I thought I'd end up fainting. The Blair Witch scared me, the isolation of it - also the ending.

I thought The Shining was one of the greats in the movie genre. There was another one which vanished for some reason, never got much notice which was truly excellent and I can't recall the name of it now. I really really liked it, too

. I'll post the title when I remember.....
My fave book was The Haunting of Hill (Hell?) House.
Amityville was a fraud taking advantage of the interest generated by The Exorcist, IMO. Of *course* Hollywood would claim it was true. Makes more money that way, more buzz if there is an argument about it. Had it just been a story I'd have liked it, but the claims of truth for it hose it in my view.

i dont think I have heard of that movie. is it an older movie? i would like to check it out. it seems like any haunting, or paranormal movie made a long time ago are always the best ones. like amityville, exorcist, poltergeist, the entity, they really focused on what a haunting would be. these days there is way too many special effects and it's all too "HollyWood" so it sometimes ruins it.

The Haunting of Hill House was made into a movie (
The Haunting) in 1963 and re-made with the same name in 1999.
The Legend of Hell House was yet another movie, similar to
The Haunting of Hill House in its plot, but a different story. Richard Matheson wrote
Hell House whereas Shirley Jackson wrote
Hill House.

Hey, thanks, Kidd

I didn't know this. I was a kid when I read the book in one of those old Readers Digest Condensed Books I found.
I'm quite annoyed to still not have the title of that really good movie surface in my mind. It was a classic sppoky ghost story all of you who prefer the more realistic types would just love....
It begins with a family stuck in the snow driving and the father gets out and goes to a pay phone for help and the family gets wiped by a truck in front of his eyes. He rents this house on campus after, is a professor there. The title is the same as a more famous movie which is not it. When I hunted down the movie to buy I had to send it back and they had to dig to find the one I meant. If I heard the title, I'd know it and be annoyed I can't bring it up now LOL. The creepiest scene involves a wheelchair. I actually screamed LOL.
That should be enough clues without ruining the story. Y'all need to find and see this one, it's really well done.
Anybody recognize it? Seems like it was two words, The (something), maybe. Not a long title.

I have to say I'm a Stephen King fan, and the movie of The Shining scared the cr*p outta me, but not as much as the book.
Same goes for The Stand. The TV mini-series did an excellent job, but the book was amazing and horrifying. There was so much more darkness and gore in the book than was in the movie (thank god). I remember reading the book one summer vacation, and I had nightmares every night until I finished the thing (I couldn't put it down). The mini-series didn't come close to the scare factor that was in the book.
Back in the day, Salem's Lot really did the trick. Even though it is dated, it is still great to watch this mini-series with David Soul and James Mason. (The newer one just didn't make the cut.) It brings back some great memories. I was a teen when it was first shown on TV. My family ran a seasonal business during Halloween and sold pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, etc. in a huge yard at the side of our Victorian farmhouse. We also gave hayrides through our fields, which we had dressed up with life-sized cutouts of Disney characters, witches, a graveyard, a huge dragon that was coming out of our pond, a coffin with a skeletal vampire, the muppets, the Great Pumpkin and Charlie Brown & Peanuts...it was great fun. We had a small witch’s house and I or my sister, dressed as a witch, would come out and threaten the people on the hay wagon as they passed by. Well, we had a fantastic rubber witch mask that was one of the scariest, most realistic ones I had ever seen with incredible fangs. So, one night as my sister and I watched Salem's Lot, in darkness except for the glow of the TV, I knew it was scaring the pants off my sister. I slowly slipped on the witches mask and just sat there, waiting.
When she looked over at me, saw the mask, she jumped five feet in the air and went running from the room, screaming. It was even funnier since she was 18 at the time. She hit me a couple of times after she calmed down, but it was worth it.
I've recently watch The Changling--one of those smart ghost stories that are more frightening without all the special effects. The Exorcist is a scary bit of film, too--but not so much after you see it a couple of hundred times.
