I was just reading through this article on unexplained-mysteries.com about "Spring Heeled Jack".

I must say, I was intreagued...
Just wanted to know if anyone has some more good links on this guy/creature that I could read about or has any insight as to what or who he was.

The link to the article I've provided says that it was most likely the Irish nobleman Marquis of Waterford, who was infamous for his hatred of women and his sadistic taste in practical jokes. Just wondering whether anyone else believes it was Marquis, or if it was in fact some sort of strange creature or human possessing extraordinary abilities...

Makes for an interesting read whether or not it was true thumbsup.gif

To be honest...I think spring heeled Jack was just the result of mass hysteria. Probably it began with someone who was really attacked, and had this story of a strange being, that ended up spreading...as soon as that happened, everyone who was attacked in the night would claim it was spring heeled jack, and that he'd bounded away into the night...they'd probably believe it too.

The problem is, the stories come from a time period were things are a little...strange. It would be far easier for people to believe in a being like that then than it would be now, and for the tale to spread so quickly, and so many people to believe what they had been attacked by him, rather than one of the thousands of normal, non-springed muggers running around at the time tongue.gif

If I remember...didn't his supposed reign of terror last some 80 years? In a time when the average lifespan was...what? Late forties if you were lucky?

I dont think we can trust the assumption that he was irish as they are often the scape goats in many things.

he sounds like an out of control batman. grin2.gif

the picture on firefrogs link makes him look like bat man gone british fox hunter. laugh.gif

and about that story where jane looked out her window and met this p-man and he said he caught jack-if he looked so terrible, how did she believe he was a p-man? sad.gif

this has no basis in fact what-so-ever. the ridiculous name denotes a ridiculous myth. just abunch of scared people (and maybe a good deal of drunk people as well) finding a way to make the murders interesting.

but now that i think of it, arent most myths that turn out true dissmissed that way? huh.gif
