Woman KO'd by flying fish

A woman has been knocked unconscious by a flying fish while boating in Florida.

Tara Spears, 32, was rushed to hospital after her close encounter with the leaping sturgeon, reports Sky News.

She is expected to make a full recovery after the incident on the Suwannee River.

Earlier this year, a leaping sturgeon severely injured a 50-year-old woman who was riding on the same waterway.

She suffered a ruptured spleen and had three fingers reattached by surgeons. However, she still lost her left little finger and a tooth.

Sturgeons are large, prehistoric-looking creatures with hard plates along their backs. They can grow up to 8ft long and weigh up to 200lbs.

Oh they get bigger than that. Atlantic sturgeons can get up 17 feet long. And some species of European sturgeons can get over 20 feet long.

I love sturgeons! They aren't dangerous at all (except when they jump). They don't have any teeth and suck food off the bottom like little vacuum cleaners. They are sooo adorable. I want to get a 750 gallon tank and house a sterlet (smaller relative of the sturgeon).

Here's a picture of a very large sturgeon (probably one from Europe).

I wonder what happened to the trouble-maker fish later.

The fish in your picture, rosenrot, was caught in Seattle, in the mouth of the Colombia river. Larger fish have been taken from the Snake River in the 1800's

Sturgeon are not the only culprit in knockicng out people. 200lb Tarpon have knocked surfers before, braking their cheek bones. The Asian Carp that have been invading the Midwest US have also hit people, and they can grow to 70 lbs.

I keep koi, but I think introducing them into lakes and rivers for gamefishing is bad. It harms the environment. Koi eat everything. Everything. So, keep them in your pond, don't let 'em get into the rivers. But I still <3 koi.

All fish jump. I even have a little betta that jumps. But here are some links to pages about sterlets (the smaller sturgeon you can keep in a tank). Link link link link
