Japanese are staying cool as a cucumber this summer with "Pepsi Ice Cucumber" a new soda based on the crisp green gourd.

The soft drink, which hit stores here on Tuesday, doesn't actually have any cucumber in it but has been artificially flavored to resemble "the refreshing taste of a fresh cucumber," said Aya Takemoto, spokeswoman of Japan's Pepsi distributor, Suntory Ltd.

"We wanted a flavor that makes people think of keeping cool in the summer heat," Takemoto said. "We thought the cucumber was just perfect."

The mint-colored soda is on sale just for the summer and only in Japan, Takemoto said. She said initial sales were brisk, and Suntory aims to sell 200,000 cases over the next three months.

Gawd! Eww... first, nasty gourmet sausages and now this... what in the hell is the matter with leaving things alone?

People think anything will be cool as long as you add cucumber to it!

Cucumber drink has been a Carib Islands specialty drink, especially in Jamaica (let's not forget seamoss drink and peanut punch). For example, on my isle they sell this soda called Spruce Beer. You've ever smelled pine needles? Well this stuff tastes like how pine needles smell. Not bad, just overly sugary and artificially flavoured. I am sure cucumber soda would taste pretty good and refreshing if done right (which they aren't doing if it is artificially flavoured).

I can't say I'm opposed to the idea of a cucumber soda, I'd give it a try. However, I'm not sure of the cucumber/pepsi combination.

I dont really get this article, I SWEAR that when i was in elementary school, we could buy Cucumber flavored soda. We dared this ugly girl to drink it, and she spit it out as soon as she tasted it. I tried it too. It tasted like ass juice.

ooooOOOoooh! tongue.gif

I think I'd try it, cucumbers are kind of refreshing and summer-y in a way.

But then I've been known to hate sodas after thinking I'd like them. Coke Blak comes to mind.

I spent 6 months in Japan. Cucumber soda would have been welcomed by me as opposed to the other bizarre foods you'll find in Japan.
While there I ate raw fish, eel livers on a stick, raw octopus tentacles, fish guts ground up, jelled and put on a stick which I mistook for a fudgecycle, sausage made from monkey meat (not bad actually).
We finally found some peanut butter and ate that until we grew sick of it, then they started serving us hamburger sandwiches made from soybeans and ground up night crawlers, whic wasn't too bad once you covered it with ketchup and onion.
Imagine waking up every morning, going down to breakfast and seeing a complete multi-colored tropical fish staring up at you from your plate, along with other "food" types I have never identified. Cucumber soda would have been a blessing. original.gif

Lemon, Orange, vanilla, grape, cherry, Those are all better than cucumber. What are they trying to do go bankrupt?

Why not do it with cucumbers? In the USA they make a soft drink thats prune flavored. They call it Dr. Pepper.

Cucumber soda? No, that's not weird enough at all... in fact, I've tasted it before and it's not half bad... fairly refreshing.

What's BAD is the Jones Soda Company out of Seattle.... they have holiday soda flavors like:

Green Bean
Mash Potatoes
Turkey and Gravy
Yams

No kidding... they offer these during the holiday season and ALL the proceeds go to charity. I've had a sip of each of them. The Green Bean one is enough to make me zuke. Oddly, the mashed potato one was bad, but drinkable if you were dying of dehydration.

The Japanese have a thing for odd-ball sodas and flavors. Most of them just taste like carbonated sugar water in my opinion. My daughter trolls the asian markets and brings home some pretty weird japanese beverages. One that she LOVES is "Yogurt soda" it comes in a tiny (2 oz?) .10 cent bottle, a 6 pack for .50 cents. It's basically just a cream type soda with yogurt rather than cream. The other one she brings home sometimes is a clear soda (tastes like sugar and carbonated water to me) and in the cap is a marble. You twist the cap, the marble falls into the soda, then you drink it from the bottle through what is like a sport cap. The marble does absolutely nothing. As far as I can tell, it's just a piece of heavy acrylic/plastic. Weird huh?
