A popular range of Thomas the Tank Engine toys have been recalled because of toxic lead in their paintwork, the NSW government says.

The recall affects a number of toy vehicles, buildings and other Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway train set components, which have now been pulled from the shelves.

Fair Trade Minister Linda Burney said about 100,000 affected products had been sold across Australia since January 2005.

"The recall notice states that surface paint on the recalled toys contains lead which is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects," Ms Burney said.

I read that in the news this morning and called my sister at 7:00 AM to ask when my nephew got his train set. Bloody scary. You'd think they would check stuff liek this out better, especially when they are making these for children.
Simple Logic

Thats scary.....kids sure like to put things in their mouths.
rassy
These things were sold since '05? WOW, what idiot decided to put the lead-based paint on children's toys in the first place? It's not like it's the 60's or something, and this was just recently discovered to be dangerous. You'd think by now that lead in paint would be something long gone, ESPECIALLY in children's toys.
Affliction
I think it's a good way to teach children that toys are for playing not eating. I think this is a great opportunity, we could build a race of super humans by booby trapping children's toys, so only the brightest survive.
