The Diary of Samuel Pepys.
An excellent firsthand account of 17th century life in England.
Although thousands of pages long, it's a must for anyone remotely interested in English history.
It's the closest thing to a time machine I've ever ran across. Cherish it.

The Witching Hour - Anne Rice...I was seething at the end. Lasher and Taltos ruined the trilogy IMO.

No, 'Lasher' and 'Taltos' were great, IMO, you got to love Micheal beating Lasher to death with a hammer at the end of 'Lasher'.

What ruined the trilogy was tying it in with the Vampires.
Oh and my favortie book? "Brave New World" probably.

So far, I have to say Geralds Game by Stephen King. He really gets into your head and makes you really wonder what are those sounds you hear bumping in the night

I loved "Child Possessed" by David St Clair. In fact I also enjoyed "The Devil rocked her cradle" and "Mine to kill" by the same author. I find his books fascinating and they keep me thinking about the cases for years afterwards. I really, really enjoyed "Hostage to the Devil" by Malachi Martin, I have to say that is one of my all-time favourites.

Fantasy
Anything by Mercedes Lackey (I know, I know haha)
Anything by Raymond Feist

Tough question!
Stealing MisMelsWell's format for this one.
Science Fiction - OSC's Ender's Game Series, though it's a close race with the Shadow series about Bean. I'm a big OSC fan, love all his books!
I'm also a big fan of a little known author by the name of John Steakley, he's got two great books, Armor and Vampires. Both well worth a read.
Classics - Homer's Odyssey
Fantasy - Lord of the Rings series, the companion books are great also. I especially enjoyed the Silmarillion and The Hobbit (not exactly a companion book, more like a prelude).
Many, many more but I would have to say these would be my top choices.

I would have to say Cloud Atlas, by John Mitchell.
It is apsolutley stunning; my favourite of all time
(only other one that comes close it The Kitchengods Wife by Amy Tan)
But with Cloud Atlas, you really can judge a book by its cover...Isn't it amazing?

"These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer"

The Bitterbynde Trilogy (by a fantastic Aussie writer, Cecilia Dart-Thorton) and The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling. I kinda have a thing for books featuring the fae

My classic fav would have to be Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice, and I also love the writings of Edgar Allan Poe and William Blake (I love 'A Poison Tree').
I also have a worn out collection of Harry Potter books (due to overreading), I adore the series but kinda stopped being 'obsessive' about it after Order of The Phoenix came out and my fav character perished

though it was kind of sus, and I've always had an inkling he may not be gone for good... my friends say it's just wishful thinking though hmph

The great Science Fiction writer Jack Vance is my favorite author and any one of his 50 or 60 published books would be my favorite.
I also put "Breakfast of Champions" and "The Sirens of Titan" by Kurt Vonnegut right near the top.
Another favorite is the very obscure "Starlight Nights" by Leslie Peltier.
I also re-read the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy about every five years.

When I was in high school I was all into this series called "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever" by Stephen R. Donaldson.
Great books, I got all my friends hooked on them but I had never known anyone else who was into them.
Then the first day that I joined this board I saw a member named
Barek Halfhand, a character in the series.
So, you know... that was pretty cool.

I like the Harry Potter series aswell but my favourite has to be Battle Royale by Koushun Takami (And no, its not a wrestling thing).
It was so controversial that it's lucky to have been published (And translated into English for that matter) so thankfully it actually manages to exist.

Anything by Terry Pratchet. he writes fantasy with a good dose of satire. Excellent books.
Also anything by Joanna Lindsey (romance) especially her viking based ones.
And Virginia Henley, her books based in England during King John and Henry are awesome.
And Anne Rice.
But out of those my all time favourite book which I read and re-read over and over again is the Hogfather by Terry Pratchet.

ok I'm not looking for highbrow. I own highbrow , read highbrow. I adore Tennysons Idylls of the King. I have the copy in blue cloth gold guild - Illustrated by Robert Ball. Heritage Club Press. New York. 1939
you can find one in nice condition for about 20 dollars.
found a illustration as in the book except this is black but it should be a reddish colour. and this looks like it didn't come out well. it should be sharp and crisp. I need a new printer !

what I'm looking for is good horror and I haven't read anything since Rice with her story on the Witch ( can't remem ber anymore. ) so it's been along time. I like her style , easy reading.
any suggestions ?

Footprints of Thunder by James F. David - combines a dose of the unexplained with dinosaurs. Great read.
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, classic pirate story.
Raptor Red by Bob Bakker
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Also I like almost anything by Micheal Crichton as well as anything dealing with the paranormal, UFOs/Aliens, and the unexplained, with a bit of history every once and awhile.

I like "The Diceman" by Luke Reinhard, good book, a bit trippy, but good.
My wife bought me a couple of books a few Christmasses ago that i keep going back to.
They are "Last Train To Memphis", & "Careless Love", by Peter Guralnick. They are Elvis Presley biographies , & are brilliant.
Enjoyed Da Vinci Code.
Also "Moondust", about what happened to all the men who walked on the Moon.
Terry Pratchett "Discworld" stuff is very entertaining.
Daniel Defoe"s "Robinson Crusoe" is still a great book, no matter how many times i read it.

I read Donaldson's books years ago too... they're definitely different! I liked them. I just KNEW I had heard the name Barek Halfhand before, I just couldn't recall where! Thanks! haha.
And sorry Glorybee, I love ya girl, but Jordan makes me want to cram forks in my eyes. haha.
I actually like Pratchett too... I mean, who can resist Granny Weatherwax? She's fantastic! I wish she was my granny!
Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (who I typically don't care for) co-wrote "Good Omens" which was a HOOT! I mean, come on, how can you not love a madcap story about a demon and an angel who accidentally lose the pre-teen Anti-Christ and have to work together to find him? Just thinking about that book cracks me up!

I don't think I have a favorite, I guess if I had to choose I'd say "The Stand".
I loved "Interview With a Vampire" and "Witching Hour", but I could never get into any of Anne Rice's other books. I see no need to waste three pages describing a tree.
The books that I'm currently reading are "The Camulod Chronicles" by Jack Whyte. If you haven't read them, it's about Camelot, sort of.
I don't usually read these kinds of books, lots of Roman military planning and weaponry and stuff, but I was staying in the hospital with my son and my other son left the first book of the series there. I picked it up out of boredom and I've been addicted since.
I need something to read in between those though, and y'all have given me a list of books to look for. Thanks!

Actually Lady Hay taht I mentioned is a really awesome book that the author did a tonne of research for. It is about a journalist that is hypnotised and while under she remembers living before, as Lady Hay, a real person in history. It is a really interesting read, at least IMO

Absolutely glorybee... absolutely!

I suppose if you were to ask me what I read when I'm feeling like reading mindless drivel... (I might regret this)...
I love Janet Evanovich who writes the Stephanie Plum mystery novels... they're totally formulaic, nothing ever gets resolved, and they're so outlandish and unrealistic... I love them.
