Broken neck for ten years

A sports-mad boy led a normal life for 10 years - despite being unaware he had a broken neck.

Alfie Tyson-Brown, 14, played rugby, surfed, went mountain biking and rode rollercoasters, reports the Daily Mirror.

But the injury - which probably happened while playing as a child - could have killed him at any time.

It was found only when he had a hospital scan after suffering blackouts and poor co-ordination.

He was immediately sent for an emergency three and a half hour operation to pin the bone.

Alfie, of Wimborne, Dorset, said: "All of a sudden I was being strapped down so I couldn't move and had a neck brace put on. I was really frightened."

Surgeon Evan Davies, of Southampton General Hospital, said: "I've never seen anything like it.

"It was incredibly frightening - I was aware that if I got it wrong he could either have a stroke or be paralysed."

Alfie's dad Chris Brown said: "It is a miracle he is still alive."
