As I mentioned in another thread, I don't think the person appears to be a monk, it seems more like a leper with a covered face. Do we have any information about leprosy history in that area?

I don't know if it's a leper. To me it looks kinda like an ancient one as described by H.P. Lovecraft. but that's just an uneducated guess.

This photo was taken in 1967 by a Reverend. This photo is one in a handful that has been scrutinized, studied, and analyzed by experts and it cannot be debunked. It is estimated that the figure in the picture is over 9 feet tale.
The church dates back to the 1500's. It is speculated that the figure is wearing a hood due to an illness namely the plague which could cause unsightly lesions and bumps.
It is a really interesting photo and very very creepy especially since it has been studied so much and deemed authentic.

I have to agree with Veledran, the figure looks more like a leper than a priest or monk. And I don't think the figure looks like scream. The mouth is all wrong. And after knowing the medical history of the area, my guess about the photo is the phantom is a person who died from Plague or leperesy. But the face area is very creepy. It bothers me.

This picture can be found on page 79 of Great Hauntings by Orbis Publishing Limited published in 1984 (ISBN 0-85613-881-9). The accompanying text states:
QUOTE
"A Haunting of a holy place? The church in this case is in Newby, in North Yorkshire. It's Vicar, the Reverend K.F. Lord, says he was amazed to find this form on his developed photograph of the altar. He later admitted that the photo had been staged to rekindle interest in the church."

I would only have to assume that the movie "Scream" used a similar face to scare the public as this authentic one has been around for a very long time. JN
