I know the Earth and Sun go through natural cycles, but has anyone noticed some very odd things are happing? The Earth is getting hotter. The melting of the polar ice. The rapped disappearance of insects and amphibians. Very odd weather patters. In some places, the seasons seem to be changing. All of these things and many more point to a very dramatic increase in solar radiation. I’m not saying it is the end of the world, but let’s just say for the sake of argument that it is. Let's just say the Sun was getting ready to nova. Obviously scientists would be aware of this and would have reported it to the government. Do you think they would tell us?

I don't think they'd be able to keep that a secret. People would be freaking out.

i think they would probably hint towards it, but knowing how evil scientists are im actually beginning to think that they are in league with microsoft..

Plenty of scientists all over the world monitor solar radiation, and it hasn't changed significantly since the measurements began.
What has changed significantly over recent years is the level of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere, now 20% up on the highest historical level.
Carbon dioxide is a "greenhouse" gas, that is, it admits incoming solar radiation in the visible spectrum and blocks outgoing Earth radiation in the infra-red spectrum.
Go figure.

I'd welcome the end of the earth.
I'd crack open a bottle of 151, twist a fattie, put on "it's the end of the world (as we know it), by REM, and wait.

all the more reason to keep it a secret. from a sophistically egotistic point of view keep the majority preoccupied while the end comes.

I tell you what, when i start hearing of NASA and other coutries with the technology to build spaceship's start making or contracting out bids to start making them at a record pace, then i will know to kiss my Butt goodbye. But to answer your question: NO they will not tell us...

WHAT makes you think nasa would divulge that information. How do we know that spacecrafts and underground survival stations dont allready exist

I dont think they would tell us cos of mass hystiria and all. Unless they had a sulision and then they would tell us cos they would think they are the best. Then again i think we would guess if the world was about to end, there would be sings all around us.

As mentioned before I don't think they would tell us unless they could fix it. I for one would like it better if we wern't told because I go fed up with so many people suddenly becoming religious and flocking to church, temple, what have you, to pay and save their souls when 2000 rolled around.

Rest assured that nothing you have heard of has anything to do with "the end of the world".

Dunno.
Would it matter?
Not to me....
And, it might be prudent to say nothing about it.

I think you are giving the worlds governments WAY to much credit if you think they could actually keep a secret...geeez
Bill Clinton was the President of the United States and he couldn't even get a BJ without the world finding out about it....

Someone would, especially in todays age where with the mass media is so important to most humans, information is such a valuable commodity.
Hypothetically, I'd want to know if the world was coming to an end, I would love to see the circus of hysteria.

personally i think that if i was in the government and i knew i wouldnt tell and if i wasnt i wouldnt wanna know abut it.
and about the spaceship thing the governments probably dont have any but i wouldnt be surprised if they did and they've probably tried/trying.

hmm I don't think they'd tell us. While I'm sure some people would love mass hysteria, it wouldn't be a pleasant thing when it's on a worldwide scale. No one would bother obeying the laws anymore, there'd be many murders and suicides, fire, destruction and chaos (looks at avatar)... I personally would like to live in complete ignorance until the end comes. If the information slipped out, the government would just try to cover it up again. As long as they keep denying the end is near, most people will take comfort in that and order would probably remain... to an extent

I can hear the debates already -
believer - is it me or is it getting hotter ?
skeptic - it's you there is no proof it's gettng hotter ( as sweat drips off his brow)
believer - is it me or does the sun look bigger than in the past ?
skeptic - it's you , in the past the sun was bigger too. it's a phase.
believer - do I smell ham ? hey our skin is burning !
skeptic - your seeing things now pass me some horseradish and lets find that ham.

Sounds like a great night!! (apart from the "everybody's going to die because the world is ending part). I'm a big REM fan, I'm going to see them in Dublin next month!
Sorry, I digress - if the world was really going to end, do you think they'd even tell us? There would be chaos, maybe they'd think if there was nothing anyone could do to change it, why tell em?

It would be nice to think they would let us know, to prepare ourselves, but we're talking about the government, who basically keeps everything to themselves...

Well, for the sake of argument, based upon the U.S. governments dark history of lying to it's citizens, force drugging it's citizens, assasinations around the world, mind control experiments on it's citizens, and the list goes on, so with that being said, I highly doubt the government would tell it's citizens "the sun is about to explode". Saying that will cause, widespread panic and riots, people will just totally not give a #@$!@#, so it would be totally chaos. But to keep that from happening, they wouldnt say anything, all the while outside the public's eye they're trying to figure out a way to escape the inevitable. "Maybe we could move to another planet!?"
Well, that just my 2 cents.......

I think the basic premise of the thread is wrong: "Scientists would report it to the government". Why would they? Decades of science about global warming was published in the scientific journals, and it has taken a very long time for governments to even acknowledge that it might be a problem, let alone do anything about it.

Depending on how it would end...
If an 'accidental' outbreak of some kind, for example a deadly virus and or an all out nuclear WW with a potential to wipe us out off the face of the earth, then the answer is a BIG NO.
I think that any major 'unnatural' catastrophe 'top $ecret government/elite' would be aware of it well in advance, covertly gathering all the top scientists, doctors/surgeons, engineers, etc etc etc and of course save their own asses underground or in space(?)
If natural for example like an approaching super sized meteor/asteroid, a massive solar gamma-ray burst or even reversal of earth's magnetic field all of which are a lot harder to keep from the masses(would'nt bet on it though)then yea, some of us might have a chance of survival but the majority would perish. Mass panic/carnage would probably be one of our biggest problems.
In both cases though i believe the top ' high ranking government officials & the super elite, etc' will always survive(already prepared)...as the people in almost all aspects of life are always the last to know anyway...''a sought of like a secret covert modern day never told you so Noah's Ark story''... lol!!
JMO...take it anyway you like.
Earthmoving is my game so if any one needs my services(underground bunker or cellar, etc)just p/m me later... lol!!

No they would not because people would panic and start killing each other for anything.
