A Swedish heavy metal fan has had his musical preferences officially classified as a disability. The results of a psychological analysis enable the metal lover to supplement his income with state benefits.

Roger Tullgren, 42, from Hässleholm in southern Sweden has just started working part time as a dishwasher at a local restaurant.

Because heavy metal dominates so many aspects of his life, the Employment Service has agreed to pay part of Tullgren's salary. His new boss meanwhile has given him a special dispensation to play loud music at work.

"I have been trying for ten years to get this classified as a handicap," Tullgren told The Local.

"I spoke to three psychologists and they finally agreed that I needed this to avoid being discriminated against."

Roger Tullgren first developed an interest in heavy metal when his older brother came home with a Black Sabbath album in 1971.

Since then little else has mattered for the 42-year-old, who has long black hair, a collection of tattoos and wears skull and crossbones jewelry.

The ageing rocker claims to have attended almost three hundred shows last year, often skipping work in the process.

Eventually his last employer tired of his absences and Tullgren was left jobless and reliant on welfare handouts.

But his sessions with the occupational psychologists led to a solution of sorts: Tullgren signed a piece of paper on which his heavy metal lifestyle was classified as a disability, an assessment that entitles him to a wage supplement from the job centre.

"I signed a form saying: 'Roger feels compelled to show his heavy metal style. This puts him in a difficult situation on the labour market. Therefore he needs extra financial help'. So now I can turn up at a job interview dressed in my normal clothes and just hand the interviewers this piece of paper," he said.

The manager at his new workplace allows him to go to concerts as long as he makes up for lost time at a later point. He is also allowed to dress as he likes and listen to heavy metal while washing up.

"But not too loud when there are guests," he said.

The Local spoke to an occupational psychologist in Stockolm, who admitted to being baffled by the decision.

"I think it's extremely strange. Unless there is an underlying diagnosis it is absolutely unbelievable that the job centre would pay pay out.

"If somebody has a gambling addiction, we don't send them down to the racetrack. We try to cure the addiction, not encourage it," he said.

Henrietta Stein, deputy employment director for the Skåne region, is also puzzled by the move; "an interest in music" is not usually sufficient to qualify for wage benefits.

"Certain cases are confidential but in general there is always a medical reason that is well-documented," she said.

Tullgren currently plays bass and guitar in two rock bands and says that he tends to get a lot of positive reactions for daring to be himself.

"Some might say that I should grow up and learn to listen to other types of music but I can't. Heavy metal is my lifestyle," he said.

Well i agree that liking heavy metal, can be classified as some kind of mental disability (j/k), but still, if this can be declared a disability, then anything can.

I think that is the whole point....that we are all incapable of taking care of ourselves and therefore it is necessary for Big Brother to come in and take over.

Oh good Lord.

This makes me sick.

I actually have a mental illness which I could go off and collect disablity on, but I don't. I work.

I choose to take care of myself and this guy is just a lazy idiot.

Wonder if I can get some kind of mental anguish settlement for having to cut my hair to get a job in today's job market?

I think my brother's friend has a dangerous addiction too. He's only about 17 who doesn't give a s*** about school or anything. Basically as he stated, if his band doesn't go well (I.E. Unsuccesful) then he's living the rest of his life as a bum.
At least a job in McDonalds could get him something. But I can't deny the shock of seeing him a few years later dancing on the street for money if that's what happens. (But I'm sure he'll be fine)

^^ That's a choice, not an addiction.

It's the addiction that led to the choice cool.gif

Deciding to never do anything else if his band doesn't make it is a choice, not an addiction.

This is the funniest topic I've read in a while. laugh.gif
Might as well make porn, cigarette, ice cream, TV, and internet forum "addictions" disabilities also.
glynne64
OMG!!! I can't believe that!! What people won't think of to get out of getting a job or taking responsiblity for themselves!!!

I'm a metal fan. I have been for over 20 years! The only thing I blame on my music is some hearing loss & being sore from head-banging or hanging out in the pit during a concert! devil.gif devil.gif

I also battle with depression/anxiety, yet I still strive to be a contributing member of society. This jerk is just pathetic! So are the people who approved his "disability"! They are the ones that need a reality check! BIG TIME!! angry.gif
distortedpandy
Oh I'm loving this. People will do -anything- to be "disabled". Pathetic.

...and so not metal.

Now, I listen to a lot of Metal. In fact, it's my dominant form. But, to lay claim, well I'll SUM it up.

There's a quota for finding uses for money laying around. NIce little bonus, too. I imagine when this guy became desperate to get money for life, he became irate. And, this led to counsel. Who, quickly turned_a_dime on him.
Affliction
Someone raised a valid point on another board I post at, it may actually be legitimate, he may have OCD or something similar.

There's other stuff/reasons before he even made this choice etc. but still addiction probably wasn't the best word for it. I'm a bit of a dopey typer sometimes. blush.gif

Obsession is the word you're probably looking for.

Still, having OCD doesn't automatically make one qualify for disability. I have it and I work and lead a fairly normal life. Usually OCD can be treated. The obsessions with OCD aren't obsessions you can conrol and pick and/or choose.

Anyway, I agree with pandy and glynne, it's just sickening. I'd really have to see what's really going on to see if what was ruled in this case is justified. I doubt it was though because if he can work as a dishwasher, he's hardly disabled.

Mentally ill people get a bad enough rap as it is to have to put up with this kind of lame BS.
GaarasDemonicPetBunny
Wow. I really love heavy metal and listening to it is the only way for me to relax, but this is too much. seriously, how can that be a disability? He could of gotten a job at Hottopic.... or some other job where he can truly be himself in the Heavy Metal aspect.
signal7
I wouldn't classify OCD, as those afflicted tend to remorse at the lack of feeling involved. And Heavy Metal definitely provokes emotion, unless you like Winger and Bon Jovi.
Cradle of Fish
Maybe his 'handicap' is that he likes bad music. If that were a real handicap, MOST people would count themselves as handicapped.
Dark entity
Now, i love metal... and i don't have a grudge against or try to judge anyone... but i hate this guy already disgust.gif

I like what a guy on the radio said after reading this story. He said if he had an Xbox 360 controller in one hand and a fake doctor note in th eother he might get disablity too.
