If someone were to shoot some type of iron missile at the sun and it reached the core, you could make it go supernova and form a black hole.
Would it be possible to control a miniature black hole with iron to fold space, to get from point A to point B instantly?

That's not true.

What does it mean to control a black hole with iron?

An If/Then statement where the If is False necessarily requires the Then to be false as well.
If: it isn't possible to shoot anything at the sun and have it reach the core...dude...the sun is 96 million miles away. Consider the fact that the sun is a star and that the radiation and heat from that star would destroy anything long before it ever reached the surface.

And I'm not even sure what Then is referring to. Black Holes do not 'fold' space....space doesn't 'fold'. It isn't a piece of paper no.gif

Not if you fired them at a supersonic speed. And the folding space is referring to going from point A to point B instantaneously by using a man made black hole to fold space and time together. I saw somewhere that if iron were to directly enter the core of a star it would go supernova in milliseconds and create a black hole.

Ah, I think I see what's happening. As you undoubtedly know, stars are powered by fusion. They smash less complex atoms together to form more complex atoms, releasing energy in the process that provides the hydrostatic pressure they need to keep from collapsing gravitationally. As a star ages, it runs out of the least complex atoms (hydrogen) and is forced to start fusing heavier ones. This works all right until it reaches iron. After that point, it takes more energy to keep the fusion going than the star gets out by doing it. Meaning that's the end of the line. The fusion can't sustain itself anymore, the hydrostatic pressure drops off, some things happen (briefly run through in this post), and if that star is big enough it explodes in a supernova.

So what I'm saying is that the presence of (lots of) iron in the core of a star is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for it to blow up. It has to run out of the lighter elements that provide its fuel; just dumping in some iron won't do anything.

Ok. Thanks.

I agree an Iron missile would melt before it reached the core. Even if it were true that we could do such a thing like this, why would anyone want to? I heard something about scientists trying to create an event horizon somewhere on earth. Sigh, don't play with matches in a paper house, other people live here too, and don't want to find themselves homeless because you said, "Og knows about fire oogah boogah!", What happens when Og starts playing with something else? Thanks Og good job all of humanity will thank you when you destroy our house because you wanted to see what it does without understanding it completely first. We'll also personally thank whoever gave Og the idea to do so I'm sure. Play with black holes and the like in space not here in our solar system. If you cant get into space to do so right now ask yourself whats more important war and greed, or space exploration? I once heard Og say," Og not happy Og smash Og smash when Og not happy!" Sigh go to school Og, go to school ok?

Please stop giving Og matches to play with, he's come close at least once. mellow.gif

Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Congratulations you said Og 11 times..

This thread died a natural death 6 months ago. As there seems to be no reason for it's resurrection other than some petty bickering I think it is time to put it out of it's misery.
