I am very interested in getting a tattoo on my right shoulder. I am wondering if this will hurt my chances of working for a police service (OPP) in the future. I assumed that if its covered it will not make a difference, but I just want to be sure before making any decision. A tattoo is definitely not worth losing a career path over. Anyone know if its a problem or not?

What kind of tattoo is it?
Xyfer
To be honest I am yet to decide. Most likely it will be some kind of animal or symbol.. I have no intention to get any tattoo of any kind of profanity.

I don't see why they wouldn't let you than. So are you trying to get into the RCMP or the city police.
Xyfer
Ontario Provincial Police..although I am also considering the RCMP. I am still a fair distance away from accomplishing either one, as I am still in school, but I don't want something like a tattoo to be a problem in the future.

As long as it's not gang related or something really mature, i don't know why they would care. I think it's easier to get in if you go to the military and than try to become a cop. It's what i would do.

I see many police officers or people who work for them with tats...if it said like **** the Police well then I could see a problem with it haha otherwise I see no problem. Man some police now a days just crazy I must say though.

Best thing to do would be to contact the relevant Authorities on tattoos in the Force, that way you will know for sure.

I have about six tattoos, all of them I can cover up if I have to - I did that for a similar reason, in case I went for a job whereby I would not be allowed to have them showing.

Nothing worse than limiting life's opportunities over a piece of ink lol.

Well..I don't know about nothing worse, but I know what your saying tongue.gif six tattoos of what might I ask? I am yet to decide what I want to get done.

I don't see it being a major issue. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I have several tattoo's which are not really welcomed in my line of work. I've kept them all in areas that are easily hidden. I'm thankful I didn't get that stupid late 90's type tattoo on my neck now. laugh.gif

When in doubt, wait it out, it's not as if your "canvas" is going anywhere. I know SEVERAL cops down here in S. Florida that have tattoos, but I can't say that I'm familiar with the rules and regs of The Ontario Provincial Police.

Make sure to get one that does not show when wearing a short sleeved shirt.

Play it safe. Either get it in a location where it willnot be visable while wearing the summer uniform or just call them and ask them. You probably won't even have to tell them your name.

Well, my sister was once a flight attendet. and she had a tat on her bottom. And they said if you had a tat you couldn't work as a flight ad. since some people might find it offesive. idk about the police stations. Hey, get a really scary tat, and if some guy gives u problems, show it to him. LOL. good luck with that.

Did your sister get fired? How would anyone find a tattoo on her bottom offensive? I think if I was your sister I would be a lot more offended having random guys trying to stare at the tattoo down my pants tongue.gif I don't think it would ever be a problem in any job having a tattoo well concealed and I highly doubt they perform routine checks, but thats just me. Its good to be sure! Laser treatement can only do so much..
