Many people whould argue the point that we live in a virtual reality (be it the matrix, brain in a jar, etc) but heres a twist in the tail.

Scientists are reasonably close to creating virtual reality on computers right? That means that (if we are already living in a virtual reality) a virtual universe will exist within a virtual universe. If this is true then it is possible that the virtual reality that we exist in was actually created within another virtual reality, which may be existing within another virtual reality! When does it end! Is are there infinate virtual realities? w00t.gif confused yet?!

If there are infinate virtual realities, one within another, and we are simply a form of data then mathematically speaking there are alternate realities and we can be transported to those realities?

Although I have not explained my idea very well, any thaughts?

There is an episode of Red Dwarf called Virtual Reality which summerises this in a comical way original.gif
Bogeyman
Yeah i saw a documentary on this a while back......Also look up "The holographic Universe" which also touches on this.
Basically we are pretty near to building a "supercomputer" it would be possible to program planets galaxies and universes in this and beings who love there....who's to say we are not part of someone elses program ?

yep, thats what im getting at! a very complex one. Iv heared an argument that the anomolies in space that cannot be explained are simply bugs in the code!

If there are infinate levels of parent realities, what if the base parent reality is destroyed? infinate realities destroyed in one go! thats alot of destruction! alot of deaths!
Lotus Flower
I think the inventor of the film The Matrix was thinking along similar lines too.

If we are all in a computer I hope the "User" is kind otherwise we are all dead-meat laugh.gif

ye lol, that could explain natural disasters or maybe the world wars was simply a multiplayer game by 2 users?
StarMountainKid
The universe could indeed be a computer-simulated virtual reality. Well, it is in a sense because our reality cannot be defined except in relation to something on a higher level of reality. Here's an interesting article on the universe as computer:

I was playing round with this theory in my head the other night, quite feasable really... If we are all made of data it would explain many problems such as:

forces: rules on the applications (policies)
dark matter: data in the storage that exists (therefore has is there, has mass etc) but has not yet been written to
blackhole: data being deleted (if deleted the its writing dark matter somewhere) or moved
everything you see would be data running within an application to form an object, which all effect each other (kinda like string theory)
ghosts: bugs in the code (deleted programs with bits and pieces missing)
time would be the system clock (not ur windows clock grin2.gif)
freewill: userinput

another idea i toyed with is that we are applications organising the data for a user... although we live our "life" we may have an underlying purpose of organising things... what if every time you parked the car in your garage you were acutally just saving a document to the drive user had asked you to do

ofcorse any system you make urself like this can be easily fit reality as you can mould it... problem is if we are in something like this... there is no way we can ever solve the puzzle - we do what we are told to (but can make choices), we only know what are presented

Oh another thing that it solves is space being infanite, because from an application point of view their is always going to be more space becoming available to us, so it will seem infinite from our position when infact it is not... or it could be a network constantly being added to like the internet.

Do i believe this? no, can i deny its possible.. no... and it can not be prooven or disprooven.. TRY i bet there is an answer for everything if you look at it like this ... but not a satisfyin 1 tongue.gif

Caana
The only way the puzzle could be solved is if a "user" was trapped in the story, and looking for a way out. What if your whole percieved reality was a hidious training program devised to destroy the user's self? By putting his awareness into some of the characters, they have basicly achieved that without harming his body mind or voice in the real reality.

It would explain why some people nut and kill other's.
DreamSlayer
I blame some thirteen year old punk for all of the natural disasters we have in the world. Think of it like when some people play The Sims, and purposely set the house and family on fire, while trapping them inside.

lol thats cool!

The argument that we live in a virtual reality is intresting but what about the bit of a virtual reality is made on a computer within a virtual reality which exist on a computer, which may be the imagination of a brain in a jar - which could be the dream of another brain in a jar, which again is in a computer. The possabilities are endless (infinate) and based on infinity there are parallel universes and also universes exactly the same as ours, there will be people exactly the same as you who have all your memories etc (due to infinity hmm.gif ) soo... as we do not have virtual reality yet, does that mean we are the end of infinity!? wacko.gif
Mr.Dot
A program dosent interact with its world the same way the real world dose. It is just a mathematical illusion and aint alive. You could theoretically build a mechanic machine that has its own consciousness. But the world in his dreams aint real.

Not yet! but isnt this the goal of what we are trying to create our computers to achieve... maybe its our job to create the next virtual world and so on

If you look at this from the view of a computer or a creator view... one possibility is that we are created to create, if our knowledge continued to grow and we managed to survive wiping ourselves out, maybe our job is to become "the creator"

The other thing to think about is that if this was a world within a computer then it would most likely have to be a quantum computer (means instead of working on 1 or 0, on or off it would work on everything being 1 and 0, on and off... almost like multiple dimensions! where everything is happening and not happening all at the same time. Brain sore yet? then answer this for me... How you like dem apples?

cool, kinda like how a brain works? not black or white but somewhere in the grey area?? yeh, i saw an article on fortean times (I think) that a quantum computer has been invented that works in 1 and 0s and the inbetweeny bits so [girly voice] ohhhhhh! ohmy.gif

sorry, im new, whats "gurning"? lol blush.gif

if we are in Computers within computers, does what mean that our "data" can be transfered to other computers and possibly meet "ourself" in one of the infinate universes where we exist (maybee the evil version! devil.gif ) and if we are made of data (like the string theory) can it be edited (with notepad! thumbsup.gif ) to change out appearance or get rid of illnesses? time travel?

hehehe never thought of that one,is there any other sicko things you can do in the sims ???
the rebirth
there are times when i see the world as through the eyes of a character on a sims game. interaction with the environment, learning and even interaction with other people. then i start to think about it and then i get myself completely confused and lie down.

edit* oh, and rikatee, gurning is the competitive "sport" of making that kind of face you have in your avatar.
Oxymoron

Actually if you think about its right their in the Old Testament. God created this Universe in 6 days and rested on the seventh if god was all powerful he could of just created in an instant. That means he was programming the universe.

lol, never thaught of it like that - he hasnt ironed out all the bugs yet thou lol. God is like microsoft! damn w00t.gif
That would explain why "god" had to say 'let there be light' for it to appear, otherwise he could think it - also to do with the light thingy - didnt he create the entire univese in the dark? he created the universe and then added light lol ph34r.gif

Idk how u'd be transported inside a virtual reality tongue.gif but tbh i wouldnt mind living in one if (lets say i was living inside a computer simulation and the person sitting outside could do anything they wanted and lets assume they were a really nice generous person) lotsa phr33 st00f WOOOO!!!!!!! w00t.gif popping outa nowhere w00t.gif from data streams we cannot begin to comprehend w00t.gif (mhmm how cool would it be if u could hack into the data stream of life and make ureself random sh** lol)

I think you are watching too many matrix movies, did you know that a guy killed his parents coz he thought he was in the matrix?

The matrix is just a movie, dont take it so seriously. This is the real world........

A lot of boredom thinking is going on original.gif the mind does strange things when it becomes bored... :| I think we become more aware of our subconcious when we are bored original.gif (subconciously ofcourse) lol

I thought a lot about this idea of "virtual reality of someone else" then I changed my mind and see the sun as a big 4 dimensional projector (space and time, maybe more). Everything, from our lives to the movement of the planet, the time and everything we're able to see, we owe it to that big machinery which depends on bigger machinery and so on...

The transported part has to be clarified because the true answer is both.

The short answer is yes.

infinity = everything

The long answer is no.

Infinity = nothing

lol and how do you know that? because your senses tell you? we can almost replicate all our senses into a virtual world already!
As I said to start with, if we are in a virtual world there is absoloutly no way we can proove it does exist.. and i dont think it could be disprooven either, as there could always be measures in place to stop us testing
