That isn't the full photograph.
In the full photograh, you can see it's a fish. It may be a megamouth shark.

You can find out more at
Cryptomundo.

Looks like a member of the catfish family to me, with its whiskery bits chopped off. If it is a catfish then certainly in France, they grow to this size quite naturally.
Why do people only post half of a picture anyway?

Kinda look like south american catfish.
Not really sure, tho:

I guess frogfish can help us alot, he likes fishing!

I thought that might be the reason.
Another contender is the Mekong River Catfish

LMAO

Just one note here. The shape of the eye leads me to believe more of the reptile family vs shark family. Sharks eyes are typically circular, correct?

In order for them to define what it was they would have to look at how its jaw aligned, tongue & teeth to tell if it was a snake.
But the body is gone so... I guess we will never find out.

Hmm, looking at more photos of the Mekong Giant, I don't think that's what it is. The eyes are different. It could be a red-tailed cat.

Hmmm.... I just dont know, None of the main contenders really seem to fit either in terms of body proportions, or max weight, or just general morphology. It appears that the tailfin has been cut off, and I cant see any other fins. Strange...
If you cut and paste the link below it shows you a 300kgs+ Mekong Giant Catfish, which I dont think this enigma is, but it is interesting just for size comparison

It is obviously a fish, once the whole photo is seen. Unlike bony fishes, Sharks do have eyelids though the body shap is not right. I believe it is a kind of catfish, but the jaw line and eyes have been "retouched" to look like the head of a snake. This is an easy form of photo manipulation that could be done back then.

It is definately not a Mekong Cat, Pangasius Cat, Wels, Arapeima (arapeimea have upturned mouth's due to being primarily surface feeders where as the photo shows a midwater feeder's mouth), Red Tail cat (come on those who have seen red tails or other catfish will know the mouth shape is completely different), nor any of the other suggested species of fish named.
It looks more likely to be a hoaxed picture of some sort, but if I had to put a genus from the fish families to it, I would personally say it is one of the larger Snakehead (Channa sp.) species (minus it's fins) over anything else.

The story was that the pic was taken on a beach in Vietnam and sent home as a post card. That is the main reason people want to call it a Mekong catfish.

Taken in Vietnam, you say? Well that narrows down the search. Here is the
Giant Snakehead, a suggestion by TheNomad. The pictures aren't the greatest so I will leave each to make his or her own decision. My other source is down right now.

Hmmmmm, to me its either not a giant snake and its fake, or its not an anaconda(anacondas have a rounder head and the body is always and i means always twice the size of the head. In this case the head is way bigger than the body, which proves its definatly not a python or anaconda.

tomang? we call the giant snakehead 'toman' over here. 1m is quite normal, there are much bigger tomans in the lakes. unlike the normal snakehead, the toman won't last that long out of water.. ops! off topic. sorry.
