In my opinion, a physician should be the first port of call - without fail. Only when all tests come back "clear" from all possibilities should other avenues be looked at. I am glad your mother saw a doctor Eric, as you say the outcome could have been disastrous otherwise.

I must admit, however, I do believe that possession is possible, but I also believe that it is not nearly as widespread as some people are claiming. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it is the extreme minority that would become afflicted as such.

Again, I cannot stress enough how important it is that if anyone suspects anyone of being possessed to FIRSTLY pack them off to a medical doctor, who will then decide if it is a psychiatrist they need to see and when they have done that and all avenues have been cleared, then move on to other possibilities. Quicktime just so I can put my own record straight, I have seen the Emily Rose movie and I have also read the book of the true story of Annaliese Michel. I have to admit that yes, I do think she was a genuine possession case. There was stuff in the book that was not in the film that made me think twice. She was also seen by medical Doctors for much of her life and they could never find the cause of her suffering. They thought they had made the correct diagnosis, but other things were just not adding up and all the medication she was on did nothing to help her. So yes, I do think she was a genuine case.

However, not all cases are the same and a Medical Doctor just has to be the first port of call - none of this immediately calling in an Exorcist to perform some ritual. If a person is genuinely physically or mentally ill, an Exorcism Ritual could be the very last thing they need, apart from that it could put the suggestion in their mind that they are, indeed, possessed, when in fact, they are not. It could be incredibly dangerous both to them and any onlookers.

Balance is needed here, without fail and as I stated earlier, a medical Doctor should always be the first port of call.

I can't answer for other 'christians', but I personally believe in one God, one Devil. But as you stated, there are other religious/tribal/cultural groups, who may not believe in the 'same' God or Devil I do. But most of those groups do believe in a benevolent higher power(s), and also in an evil entity, whatever form they see it as. Therefore, their beliefs are still in conflict with the Devil (or their evil power/entity), as they do believe he/they exist. If they claimed one of their members was possessed, I wouldn't dismiss it off-hand (again, as with 'christians', I would want to know that they had exhausted all physical/mental explanations first). I'm not sure exactly what you were asking, though, about "why are your demons better/truer than their demons"? If you could give some more detail about that question? But I don't think 'mine' are better/truer than 'theirs'.... I believe they're one and the same, the religious/tribal/cultural group just calls them by a different name. Was that what you were looking for? I hope I made sense answering your questions. If I didn't, please feel free to ask for more clarification on my part.

I can remember when my Mum were going through a stage/menopause were she would shout and be stressed all the time... Life was sometimes unbearable... The doctor gave her HRT she changed back to her normal self within a few days... It is my opinion that hormones can play apart also..

To suggest that anyone seek only spiritual aid and ignore medical advice is in my mind dangerous to say the least. Of course the figures for mental illness have risen so much more is known and therefore diagnosed. Also as there is less stigma about the issue more people step forward for help and are open. At one time many cases of depression or bi -polar woud have been brushed under the carpet, eplilepsy and many other disorders seen as possesion. The cases do not increase merely the knowledge and understanding of these things.
I hope quicktime that no one mentally ill is ever in your charge as i would see your way of dealing with them as abuse. Say a prayer, go to church, see an alternative healer, whatever floats your boat but DO NOT completely ignore the medical knowledge our society has worked so hard to collect.
