The doctor said the problem of NEOs is now being properly addressed? I can't believe that, especially since reading that only a very small percentage of the space around us is being observed, AND the recent problem with paths of NEOs being blocked by the sun!!
Personally, I don't feel any more secure after reading his statement! :-/
(btw, thanks, MM, nice find! ;) )

I don't feel anymore secure either, KC. Although it is unlikely that this asteroid will hit us, it is an absolute certainty that earth will be hit by a devastating impact. The question is not if, but when. :s4

This reminds me of that "Outer Limits" episode where the sun is exploding, so on the night side the really geeky doctor tries to live out the rest of his life, and then it turns out to be a solar flare, and they survive on love, champagne, crackers, and cheese.
You two keeping digging, I'll get my bree and triscuits, and give Barry White a call!

Hey Magik, thanks for the article.
:s9 :s9 While we are all running for cover with shovel in hand, it's interesting to note that the Mayans predicted great devastion in the year 2012.....according to the book, "The Mayan Prophecies", by Maurice Cotterell and someone else? With the Mayans being eternal sky watchers and excelling in astronomy they may have spotted an asteroid coming earlier? I don't mean to be a prophet of doom, just food for thought.........OK RUN !!!!! :s9 :s9 :s9 :s9 :s9

azazel,
The Mayan calender supposedly comes to an end Dec.21st, 2012. We had a small discussion about that sometime last year I think. Very interesting topic, although I have not read any books on it.

Why don't you all hire a company to do all the digging? Will go much faster.. :s04 The money shouldn't be a problem, sell it all before the rest know it will all be worthless after the impact :s2

I maybe got an solution for the problem when Atseroids hit. It we can't knock it out of the course, and can't blast the damn thing, just make it go slower and land it, like a huge plane. Attach 3 rockets that brake the thing and a lot of huge parachutes, that might work! And it may also burn in athmosphere for the most part if we do it that way (but also the rockets and parachutes)

Odin,
You’re going off on a tangent there. ;D What you wanna do, and this is where modern thinking is letting us down, is not to move the asteriod, but to simply brake out of the Sun's orbit, and go AWOL ourselves. :s6

Tommy, that's a good idea. If you wanna freeze, of course. ;D Well I'd love to stay and chat, but I've got some digging to do. Oh and Odin, that's not such a bad idea, but how could our modern rocket ships catch up to that thing? What I'm saying is, if we do send up rockets to put this asteriod on breaks, these breaking mechinisms would have to be deployed immediately and attach immediately onto the asteriod, or else the rocket would pass it and have to turn around. But that all depends on how fast this rock is moving...

Who knows what developments we might make before this thing becomes a serious threat.
Why don't we either:
A) Send a bomb out to explode near the object and thereby cause a shockwave which would deflect it off course but leave it in one piece?
B) Move to Mars?

OH no now Im really scared :s4.
Loonboy the problem with blowing it up would be that the debris caused by the explosion could cause more problems ,in the form of a meteor shower that would create earthquakes , dust clouds , volcanic eruptions , forrest fires , and tidal waves . With the first few blocking out the sun for a very long time those people who didnt die in the first part of such a catastrophie would eventually freeze or starve to death.
Oh well , I think Im just gonna hang out with Testbear .
Pass the champaigne if Im going out Im going out numb . ;)

LB,
I have thought about that a lot too. Deflecting it, but leaving it in one peace. It seems like a valid option, but unless it can be tested, who knows if it would actually work? That would be great if an idea was implemented and tested before it is really needed. Of course we could possibly send a missile to a known asteroid far away to test it's feasibility, but that could make an asteroid that would normally hit us a million years from now potentially hit us in a hundred or so.

As adaptable the human species is I don't think the sun being blocked out would off to many of us. I know our bodies uses the sunlight to make vitamin D & E, although we have vitamin suppliments we just might be a bit wooley again. I for one will most likely be a pile of dust in an unforgotten hole when and if we are hit.

[blue]Kismit, I meant deflect and not destroy, leaving the thing in one piece.
Maybe we should start practicing now and do a 'star wars' thing on the metors/asteroids.

oh I see Loonboy
Allthough I worrie that we may deflect it toward some unsuspecting planet containing extra terrestrial life :s6
Oh and then they may innocently in turn deflect it back at us :s6
Then gosh we would have to......it's kinda like intergalactic ping pong ;D
My point is , I dont think you should really fret to much . When the only way to really live life is to live life . I'm not going to worrie about when an Asteroid may hit the earth , if a polar shift is immenent , or even if the sun will one day expand and scorch me to a cinder. I may not have time the universe may collapse in on itself at any moment.

sometime last year, a very large meteor exploded over Alabama. i happened to be awake- it was like 4am or so. anyways, i thought a police helicopter had shined a spotlight on my apartment building. i ran to my living room window and looked up at it. night became the brightest blue daylight. the object was half the size of the sky and wrapped in glowing green flames. it was very, very strange. there was a large explosion sound and a small earthquake caused by the meteor's explosion in the sky. although it made the local news, it barely got any national press. Birmingham has over a million people in its metro area. that could have been a very nasty catastrophe. ive looked for any stories about it on the net, but have come up empty. i know that the local news had some footage from convience store cameras that show night become day and then BOOM! everything shakes from the explosion. this was over an area of about 250 square miles, mind you. very frightening.
this is copy and paste info i found on it from a website. other info has been all deleted or covered up, depending on your perspective

EMAIL, 12/6/99 9:28:58 AM Pacific Standard Time: Hello! My name is Tim and I have been looking at your site for a couple weeks, reading all the great articles. I do not know if you have heard of it yet, but the news is reporting a "Fireball" that came over Alabama from the Gulf area and hit in North Alabama. It was reported on CNN with video footage from a surveillance camera in Montgomery, AL, showing a flash of light on the ground. In North AL, where I live, residents reported their bedrooms lighting up, a sonic boom, and fires were reported to have developed, indicating an impact. I have not found out the county yet as I have not seen any other news on it. I am still checking and trying to find out any other info. I believe this happened Fri or Sat. night. Hope you have more info on this.
EMAIL, 12/6/99 1:05:56 PM Pacific Standard Time: I was hoping to find someone in the chat room talking about this. A friend of mine, who was coming home about 4 am this morning, saw what he describes as a meteor. He said that the whole sky lit up and that the body itself was blue and green, like gases burning. He says it was pretty big from his prespective and was visible for 10 seconds. It seemed to be heading towards 280, near his mother's house. He spoke with his mother today and she reports that at around the same time of the morning her house shook. Have there been any reports on the news about the meteor?
