One of the first great leaders

Harvey W. Wiley, MD, Chief Chemist in the Bureau of Chemistry at the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 29 years. Before he took his job at the USDA, Wiley had made a name for himself in his tireless efforts back home in Indiana as the watchdog at the State Board of Health analyzing the sugars and syrups sold in the state to make sure they were free of adulterations such as glucose, which he believed damaged the quality of natural sweeteners such as honey.

Once established in his post at the USDA, Wiley successfully helped Congress in answering their questions about the safety of food chemical preservatives. Then, in 1902, Wiley was granted $5,000 to actually study the health effects in humans when chemical preservatives, food coloring and other substances were put into foods.

FARMERS OUTRAGED AT VICTORIAN CONTAMINATION PLAN

The Network of Concerned Farmers was outraged today at news that the Victorian State Government plans to lift the moratorium on genetically modified crops. The key issue of concern for the NCF is the unfair costs and liabilities that will be imposed on non-GM farmers due to the problems associated with segregating GM from non-GM crops in order to supply markets that are GM sensitive.

"This is a deliberate attempt to contaminate Victoria's GM-free status and the Victorian Government has failed farmers by refusing to protect farmers from unfair costs and liabilities. Farmers and consumers will be denied choice as it is expected that non-GM farmers will be forced to market as GM," said Mrs Julie Newman, National Spokesperson for the Network of Concerned Farmers.

The Society's claims against Pusztai's work led to the Hungarian-born doctor quitting his position at the Institute and left his reputation in ruins.

Pusztai, a world authority on lectins, the natural plant insecticides, tested potatoes which had been genetically modified to produce a lectin usually found in snowdrops.

He compared the fate of rats fed these potatoes with that of rats fed ordinary potatoes, and also with a group fed potato and the snowdrop separately.

Pusztai reported that the rats that were fed genetically modified potato suffered stunted growth, damaged organs and impaired immune systems.

However, within two days of going public about his concerns on the World in Action programme, Pusztai was suspended, his email diverted and his computers sealed off. He was removed from all European Union research programmes, international activities and conferences.

12. CaMV 35S promoter increases horizontal gene transfer

Evidence suggests that transgenic constructs with the CaMV 35S promoter might be especially unstable and prone to horizontal gene transfer and recombination, with all the attendant hazards: gene mutations due to random insertion, cancer, reactivation of dormant viruses and generation of new viruses. This promoter is present in most GM crops being grown commercially today.
