SAO PAULO, Brazil - A Brazilian pilot managed to land a medical airlift plane safely after it collided with two vultures, shattering the cockpit window and sending glass shards into his eye.
William Pereira Fraga, 22, took off Sunday in a twin-engine plane from a Sao Paulo airport after dropping off a patient.
The plane was at an altitude of 1,300 metres (4,265 feet) when it collided with the large birds.
"One hit the fuselage and the other smashed into the cockpit window, shattering it," Santos said.
Glass fragments pierced Fraga's left eye, partially blinding him but he was able to set the plane down 15 minutes later at a small airport. Santos said a doctor and a nurse who were also on the plane administered first aid to the pilot before the landing.
Fraga had surgery before returning to his home in central Brazil.
