Goddess, 10, sacked

A ten-year-old goddess has been stripped of her "divine" status in Nepal - for visiting the US.

Sajani Shakya was installed at the age of two as Kumari of the ancient town of Bhaktapur, near Kathmandu.

The position made her one of Nepal's top three goddesses, revered by Hindus and Buddhists, reports the Daily Mirror.

But her trip to promote a UK-made documentary on Nepal's traditions and political turmoil has upset local religious leaders.

Bhaktapur temple official Jai Prasad Regmi said: "It is wrong and against the tradition for her to go on a foreign tour without permission.

"We will search for a new Kumari and install her as the living goddess."

Goddesses live isolated lives, making odd appearances at religious festivals until they are retired after puberty.

The Mule
what? she didn't have the powers to stop them? some goddess!
GoddessWhispers
It is a bit odd to afford her goddess status, and to then claim because she visited the US she is now impure, and not worthy of retaining that status, for having left Nepal. Which is forbidden to a young girl of her station. I guess goddess purity can't withstand the Yankee ornery factor! tongue.gif laugh.gif

Sounds like the religious leaders didn't get their percentage.

Hey,hey, hey, heeeey! tongue.gif They makey you a goddess, they can takey away. laugh.gif

It is a good point. I wonder how she's coping with that though. She was raised with the understanding this is who she is. Now that it's been stripped from her, it must be devastating.

Maybe. Talk about spoiled though.

I just flipped through the pictures that accompanied the article. The poor girl looks so sad in her goddess get up.

So now I wonder if the revocation of her status as a goddess would imply that they made a mistake in the first place...if so would that mean that she was never a goddess in the first place and therefore could not be considered an ex-goddess. Following this line of reasoning maybe she will be able to land a man when she gets a little older...since she would not carry the bad luck stigma associated with being a former goddess.

the past goddesses didn't know what to do with themselves too. these thing only last until she gets her first period anyway. sad though
