Hyderabad, India - A newborn baby girl was buried alive by her family in southern India on Thursday but was rescued when a farmer saw the baby's hand sticking out of the ground.

The two-day-old baby, who had apparently never been fed, is recovering in a hospital.

Indian society has long favoured boys, who do not require the enormous dowry payments that bankrupt many poor families when their daughters marry.

The baby was buried by her maternal grandfather, and his brother, with the consent of the baby's mother.

Police arrested the two men and will charge them with attempted murder.

He has seven daughters and "he feared that he will not be able to bear the burden of the eight females in the family."

The baby was rescued when a farmer, saw her hand while he was driving to his fields on a tractor. He and other villagers rushed the baby to a nearby hospital.

The unnamed baby weighed less than four pounds

When i read something like this something just clicks in my head and this may not be "morally right" but her parents need to be set afire and stoned to death

makes me wonder how often this happens and someone doesn't find the baby... I didn't realize how backwards India was, what with making girls into temple whores, and killing baby girls because the family might have a hard time raising a dowry... rather twisted. IMO

males have always been the ones families want to keep look at china when women had girls they would take them to rivers and drown them its sick just freaking sick

just because something is a part of a culture doesn't make it right... with that kind of thinking slavery, headhunting, cannibalism, etc should be allowed if it’s part of some cultures belief...

well what right do we have of enforcing our morality on others to me thats even more wrong it is disgusting im blown away that a mother and father could willingly do this but to impose on their culture and beliefs.. we have no right

I have heard that in India they kill thier daughters soon after birth which is hard enough to imagine, but to bury the poor little thing alive is torturing the inocent baby !I understand about cultural differences but thats an evil act ! And now in a country where she,s concidered of little or no value at all, i wonder what sort of life this little one will have? crying.gif

I agree with you, the torture that poor little girl went through. Though, I read some hope in that article. Yeah, it's sad, because of her gender, she is seen as being of little value, but a farmer and some villagers thought she was valuable enough to save and rush to the hospital. I am hoping that farmer or some of the villagers have expressed some hope in adopting her.

this isn't a case of forcing our morality on others. it's wrong, that's why people are under arrest... it's killing girls because a family is poor and can't afford a dowry that's troubling... IMO

I just dont know how you can do this to your own child. She carried her for 9 months of her life and then said "well we might not be able to pay her dowry so lets get rid of her!" What a world we live in.

I am sorry but my mind cannot get to wraps that people do this. God have mercy on her (the Mothers) soul.... (she is gonna need it)

It's not about culture or morality it's about human life. I dont give a flyin fruitcake what people's beliefs are you do not take a life just because it will be a burden to you. mad.gif

Well, consider this as to what I was referring to as their culture. They are poor, otherwise they would not have tried to kill their baby. I do not agree with killing the baby, I am horrified that someone would do this... BUT I was taking into consideration that they are poor, therefore I assumed that the education level of their house was low. And what is education but learning and understanding things from a larger scope. Obviously these people didn't have that learning and understanding. Until the poor are educated and not held back by social prejudices that have been plaguing their families for centuries, then practices like this will continue. That is what I meant by their culture. If you know anything about their culture, you will understand that in rural communities, they don't have the advantage of being exposed to more modern ideas. It is unfortunate, and in our eyes horrifying, but, we also have to remember that there is more to the story than just the baby, it is the way these people have lived for many centuries and it takes time to teach them and guide them into a more modern way of thinking and acting.
