July 7
Mesa, Ariz. - An Arizona woman spent her Fourth of July chained to a tree in 104-degree heat to highlight the plight of dogs stuck outside in hot summer weather.

Rebecca Schneider, who is involved with the group, "Dogs Deserve Better," was among nearly 100 people who staged similar protests across the country Wednesday.

The director of outreach programs with the Arizona Animal Welfare League, said the state law requires chained animals to have access to shade and water, news that he said comes as a surprise to people new to the desert heat.

Schneider, who owns two dogs, says she believes her publicity stunt was well worth the hot day in the sun if she succeeded in educating folks on the heat-related dangers to dogs.

I know this was her choice, and I really hope she made her point...I have no idea what has happened to people's common sense..I've seen this in neighborhoods and if seen too often, the animal shelter gets called to give these idiots a warning... mad.gif

they should chain the owners without food or water or shelter. especially on hot or cold days.

too many times you see poor dogs chained up. nothing to eat or drink. chain usually tangled around a tree , and like a neighbor of mine ( that I called on) who had his 1 year old dog on a 6' leash tied to a fence beneath my bedroom window ( where I was recovering from brain surgery) with no water and fed him once a day , that dog would cry and cry. It would see the teen boys and cry harder. no one would play with it because the dog played too rough ( but that was because no one played with it consistently.) the dog listened to me. I even taught it to sit with puppy training cookies and the owner was amazed it listened to me. duh I spent more time with the dog than he.

finally I had to call humane services because of the never ending crying and barking ( yes I asked them over and over about it - because of the pain of just having had brain surgery) One day I noticed the dog was gone. The never got another and were soon evicted anyway ( thank god).

they need to chain the stupid owners. let them suffer.

mad.gif I will never understand why people get a pet if they are not even interested enough in it to feed, give it water or play with and love and respect the animal! I mean whats the point? Do they enjoy the fact that they cause such suffering? I to believe they should be given a good dose of the same! thumbdown.gif

I agree.

Animals are not for getting and then tying up and leaving in the yard.

It burns me up to no end to see this.

My two dogs and two cats (and now two fish disgust.gif ) all live in the house with the family. My dogs go out with us and they are like my children.

People who think pets are disposable should be shot.

My dog is my best freind. In fact, Buddy is sleeping right next to me as I type. He watches out for me and will get up, no matter the time and give me an escort to the bathroom. I have never understood why people get a pet then chain it outside. What kind of enjoyment can they or their dog get from that? There are many people that just don't think about the heat and the effect it can have. Just look at all the dummies that leave their kids in a hot car. If they don't think ahead concerning their children they sure aren't going to for a dog.

I also hate it when dogs are locked in cars in hot weather, whilst the owners go shopping. (I've actually heard of people doing this with their babies too!). Beggers belief.

The owners often say, when they arrive back at the car to waiting people concerned for the health of those left inside "Oh but I left the sun roof open" or "I left the window ajar". Big deal, the temperatures inside a car can rise to an unbearable temperature.

Some people are as mad as a hatter (and I don't mean that affectionately either) with no common sense at all angry.gif
