Victoria, Texas - A stray kitten has adopted a 3-year-old dog as its mother, feeding from the unusually cooperative dachshund in the morning, at night and after naps.

"That's not going to happen very often," said the veterinarian who added that the kitten "got lucky" in finding a dog with those maternal instincts.

The kitten, now named Tahoe, was found under the hood of Eunice Collins' running Chevrolet Tahoe a few weeks ago. Collins kept the kitten. Four days later, she saw her dog, Lillie, feeding him, with the kitten purring and pawing at the dog's belly.

"I couldn't believe it," Collins said. "She has just taken Tahoe on as her baby and has been nurturing and taking care of him. They're just very close."

My dog takes care of every stray kitten she can find ... I don't see anything wrong with that (except that I have to bottle feed them if they are too little)

I read the artical also and thought ,What a lucky kitty not to get all chewed up by the engine! The part that really struck me though was that the vet said the dogs maternal insticts were so strong that she actually developed a fake pregnancy which enabled the right hormones to produce the milk she,s feeding the kitten! I,ve heard of hysterical pregnancy in humans but never in an animal ! She will deffinatly make a great mom to her own pups if and when she has them!

Thats wonderful...lucky kitty...long happy life for him, he deserves it.

I'm so glad that maternal instincts aren't just associated with humans....It's amazing what animals will do...
