Last night as I was looking out my window, laying in my bed, I suddenly saw this bright white light come out of nowhere. It was about 2 or 3 times brighter than the brightest star in the sky. I first saw it a 11:11, and it was in the sky to the southwest. It just showed up out of nowhere and it began to dim then it just shut off like you would shut off a light. I then saw it again in the sky, lower this time at about 11:30. The weird thing is that it moved. It was not another star as I could see other stars and I have never seen it before. It wasn't a firefly as I had originally thought, and It wasn't a plane. Any advice on what it was? Thanks. original.gif

Could have been the light of a helicopter since they can remain stationary and turn it off and on.

Sounds likely to have been an Iridium Flare.

The Iridium Satellites have anteneas that are very reflective, like mirrors. These reflect sunlight in 30 mile swaths across the Earth's surface on a regular basis. They are quite impressive to see. Go to the Heavens Above website and enter your location and you can see the predicted visible Iridium Flares in your area.

Yeah, but this didn't move, it just showed up out of nowhere.

Well, showing up out of nowhere is what Iridium Flares do. Often they appear quite stationary, other times motion can be noticed it just depends on the Flare and the lighting conditions.

These flares are associated with the Iridium communications satelites:

It could quite possibly be a chopper.

Yes, that is why they are called "Iridium Flares". I also pointed out that Heavens Above predicts the "Flares".

I see these flares every time I look at the evening sky.
