Okay, my grandmother claims from experience that if you get a hair of a horse's tail and put it in a bucket of water, over the course of a few hours it will turn into a worm/water snake type creature. Of course, she didn't believe this could happen until her husband showed her. I believe her 100% and I've tried googling around to see what is the cause of this but nothings turned up.
Any thoughts?

I think people would have found out about this over the hundreds of years we have spent with horses.

Well, that is quite easy, it should not be so difficult to get hold of a hair of an horsetail and a bucket of water. Happy experimenting.

Speaking of horsesh**.... maybe the tail has some feces on it that contains worms and in the water they exit the feces.

There actually might be some possiblites about the worms....pinworms...this is a video on parasites..
link maybe if a tail hair is removed with root it might contain a/some of these types of worms and may be viewable in the water.maybe justa thought

I did it guess what....................the hair from the horses tale transformed into...................a wet and soggy hair from a horses tale.
I can't believe I actually did the test but I had to just to point out that it does not work!!! , before some folks pop up getting carried away and letting their imagination running wild and start claiming that it is true then getting all bent out of shape with everyone else who does not believe it works.,

Good job, now if you teke taht hair and put it in alcohol overnight you can use it as hygrometer.

When I was a child it was a common thing to take a long horse hair and put it in a glass canning jar of water to wait for it to turn to a wiggly hair. It takes 24 to 48 hours for the bacteria to build up enough for it to start wiggling.

Sadly enough, I've actually heard of this before. I have lived in a very rural (back in the hills) area all my life and you wouldn't believe some of the old wives tales I've heard and some people still believe, lol. I know they aren't real but I find myself reciting them on instinct on occasion, out of habit and my husband just rolls his eyes at me.

I think your grandmother may believe this 100% but maybe it was her husband that played the joke on her. I'm sure they wouldn't have sat around for a few hours staring at the bucket so maybe when she wasn't looking he put a worm in the bucket and pranked her.
