U.S. warns of terror threat equal to 9/11

8 posts in this topic

user posted imageThe U.S. government has raised its terror alert to the second highest level and warned Americans there is a high risk militants might launch attacks around the holidays in the United States that could be bigger than those of September 11, 2001. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said threat indicators are "perhaps greater now than at any point" since the 2001 attacks and promised that all federal departments and agencies would increase their defences against what he called "al Quad's continued desire to carry out attacks against our homeland." The warning on Sunday came despite White House assurances that many of al Qaeda's operations had been disrupted and that the occupation of Iraq was making the world safer.

Ridge said al Qaeda might try to use aircraft in new attacks -- as Osama bin Laden's global network of militants did to strike the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon more than two years ago, killing nearly 3,000 people.

U.S. officials attributed the warning to "credible sources," and ordered the colour-coded alert system raised to orange -- denoting "a high risk" of terrorist attacks -- from yellow, which the Department of Homeland Security defines as "a significant" or "elevated" risk of terrorist attacks.

It is the fifth time the orange alert has been activated since the system was instituted in March last year.

"The information we have indicates that extremists abroad are anticipating near-term attacks that they believe will either rival or exceed the attacks that occurred in New York and the Pentagon and the fields of Pennsylvania," said Ridge, who met early on Sunday with President George W. Bush's homeland security advisers.

How strong of an army does Osama Bin Laden have? What weapons does he have and what machines (air fighters, ships, tanks, etc.) does he have?

Osama's strategically played war on WTC, and the U.S. itself, was almost seemingly created with precision and accuracy. Who exactly are the "brains" of his operations?

What i don't understand is that, Osama and his militant army begain their major attack on the U.S. and yet the U.S. did not retaliate as much as i'd hope they'd do. I surely hoped, that the entire U.S. army and special operatives would be on the hunt for Osama and his army right after that strike, but they didn't. (This is what i've noticed from watching the news)

When President Bush believed that Saddam Hussein had WMD (Weapon's of mass destruction) he was quick to make his preemptive strike on Saddam's army.

The U.S brought mostly all of their army towards Iraq but did not do as much to stop Osama. Sure there are armies still out there looking for Osama, but are they enough? If Saddam wasn't the one who made the decision to kill almost 3 000 innocent lives, why did President Bush decide to get all his army ready to attack him and not Osama?

The fact that Saddam Hussein, who is richer than Osama--i might add--was found before Osama Bin Laden makes me furious. Why doesn't the U.S. get their whole army out and look for that extreme militant and remove him from his power.

It's seems as though the U.S. is toying with Osama, if the U.S. is as strong as a force as other countries and other people say they are, why don't they get Osama's hunt over with and use every man they can get. The faster they find Osama and every one of his military extremists the safer the world will be.

How strong of an army does Osama Bin Laden have?
It's not a matter of how strong his army is, but how loyal. Osama's followers willingly sacrifice their lives to kill westerners, simply because they are told to. One of the problems are the seemingly endless supply of people so willing to murder for Osama, because he has brainwashed them into thinking that what they are doing is the right thing.

What i don't understand is that, Osama and his militant army begain their major attack on the U.S. and yet the U.S. did not retaliate as much as i'd hope they'd do.
At that time, Osama wasn't hiding, but was nice and comfortable inside Afghanistan. The U.S. government knows it just can't go marching into a sovereign nation making demands, at least not until we have our forces ready original.gif When our forces were ready, and ample time was given to Mollah Mohammad Omar, we went in and conquered the whole nation.

When President Bush believed that Saddam Hussein had WMD (Weapon's of mass destruction) he was quick to make his preemptive strike on Saddam's army.
Nope. Saddam Hussein has violated U.N. resolutions for more than 10 years, and was currently in violation when the attacks on his country began. You said Bush was quick to strike, but years of violations, and months of military buildup went on prior to the invasion of Iraq

The U.S brought mostly all of their army towards Iraq but did not do as much to stop Osama.
This is because Iraq had a conventional army, which was annihilated by the conventional forces of the coalition. Osama's soldiers are unconventional. You can't send conventional armies to fight this type of warfare. Intelligence agencies and special ops from many nations are involved in the war on terror. It's a tougher war to win, but progress is being made.

if the U.S. is as strong as a force as other countries and other people say they are, why don't they get Osama's hunt over with and use every man they can get.
The U.S. is not known to be specially talented hunting in house to house urban warfare or cave hopping to eliminate terrorists, however I do agree with you that more should be done to train more specialists for this and concentrate on capturing him

I personally do not believe that we are in danger. I tell you why - oh wait I can't but I have inside sources that are um of the same gene pool as I. I think it's just a warning to everyone to stay on their toes and to let "them" know that we are still watching and waiting and will not back down.

Homer i don't really know much about the hunt for Osama but you seem to.

So i take it we (the british) are quite heavily involved in the search as we have experience with NOrthern Ireland in that type of operation?

We don't hear much about that here and if we are not helping then why?

I'm hoping that the U.S is asking for help from the British Special Forces, and that we just have not heard much about it. They have been at the job far longer than any force the U.S. has. If not it would be a case of arrogance on a grand scale.

But if the British Spec-Forces are helping prehapes it would be best to keep them under the spotlight; so that they can do wha needs to be done without the media breathing down their necks. For I am sure a lot of the jobs that must be done will be extremely messy.

Yeah your right crosswarrior. I didn't think about it like that. Maybe it's better left alone. I just hope they get him soon.
