Bear's Quest Posted September 30, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 30, 2007 Its so true, they would still be there in '91 trying to build an infrastructure Iraq wouldn't approve of. They foreseen that it would of been a waste time, money and lives.
Lord Umbarger Posted October 1, 2007 #3 Share Posted October 1, 2007 Rather all that is true or not, you have to remember that the U.N. resolution only allowed for a removal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait, not the removal of Saddam from power. Even the left hook around Kuwait that actually was crossed part of Iraq was concidered by some to be a violation of the U.N. mandate. It was later justified because the ends justified the means and the troops did not "occupy" Iraqi terretory, they merely passed though it. Let's not forget, enforcing U.N. mandates was a precedent set forth by Ex president Clinton in the Balkins.
Caesar Posted October 1, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 1, 2007 I think terrorism wasn't a factor back then, its a big reason why we invaded. nore did we know about the Oil-for-food faisco.
explorer Posted October 1, 2007 #5 Share Posted October 1, 2007 I think terrorism wasn't a factor back then, its a big reason why we invaded. nore did we know about the Oil-for-food faisco. Neither terrorism nor the oil for food scandal were justification enough, by themselves or combined, for the '03 invasion. The implied threat of terrorism helped build support for the idea of defending the homeland against a dictatorship that hadn't directly attacked the US and as the '03 invasion showed, didn't have much military resistance to offer. The real inspiration is a deeper shade of grey than the oil for food scandal.
