Barack Obama - we must tear down the world's walls

Barack Obama latched on to the symbolic power of the Berlin wall as a he launched the most keenly anticipated speech of his political career in front of tens of thousands of Berliners.

Speaking at the foot of the Victory Column in the German capital the Democratic presidential nominee told the cheering crowd that the world "cannot afford to be divided" and held out the concept of a planet free of nuclear weapons.

He said: “While the 20th Century taught us that we shared a destiny, the 21st Century has shown us a time when the people of the world are more intertwined than ever before.”

Pointing out that the terrorists of September 11 plotted in Hamburg and trained in Karachi, he suggested that in the globalised world poorly secured secrets in the former Soviet Union, or a rogue Pakistani scientist could cause a nuclear bomb blast in Paris.

He said: “The greatest danger to all of is to allow new walls to divide us”

“These are the new walls we must tear down - history has taught us that walls can be torn down."

Sen Obama hopes the set-piece will help him seize the initiative in the race for the White House with a powerful address laying out his vision for America's relationship with Europe.

He added: “This is the moment when we must defeat terror, when we must dry up the well of extremism.

“If we could win a battle of ideas against the communists we can stand with the vast majority of Muslims who reject Islamic extremism.

"This is the moment when we must renew the goal of a world without nuclear weapons. We need not stand idly by and watch further spread of the deadly atom."

If we have Reagan flashbacks we will remember that Reagan meant what he said mostly. If that happens where will Obama stand.

what was it that Reagan meant ? the wall would have come down anyway. he had nothing to do with it. finances did. He just had a PR moment. Obama is asking walls come down that are symbolic. that divide us. much harder to do. Reagan built walls ( Iran -Contra , selling weapons to Iraq. training and financing Bin laden)

Revise and rewrite history is the only thing you can do now.

Here we have someone merely talking and have done nothing that you are already praising and giving credit to, while Reagan who have accomplished what he said, you trash and change story.

Obama is asking but not offering a plan. He thinks he can simply talk, or is he willing to give up some of our way of life to make the walls come down?

peace and logic. not idealistic but takes harder work than bombing a country.

You will use peace and logic against a Hitler, Saddam or a culture that cut heads on videos???

...a culture that cut heads on videos???

It's a whole culture now, eh?

For sane people, violence is a last resort, but for you, at least where muslims are concerned, it's top of the list. Seek help.

In your Reagan flashbacks, do you see the most corrupt administration in national history?

"Yes, there have been differences between America and Europe. No doubt, there will be differences in the future. But the burdens of global citizenship continue to bind us together. A change of leadership in Washington will not lift this burden. In this new century, Americans and Europeans alike will be required to do more - not less. Partnership and cooperation among nations is not a choice; it is the one way, the only way, to protect our common security and advance our common humanity." - Obama

YOU are re-writing the history because it is YOU that has assigned these heinous crimes to an entire culture. You said "culture" that means you are assigning all of these extreme acts to an entire belief system. Grow up... read some real history, it wasnt Islam that was the agressor, it was the Roman Catholic church, it was the Inquisition, it was the Witch Hunts,.. Islam allowed Christianity, and Judaism, to flourish in Iberia, it was tolerant, it kept alive the spark of invention and creativity whilst the Christian, and Jewish forces chose to impose doctrinal mandates...

The renaissance in europe was ony achievable because of the incredibly detailed work and transcriptions that the Islamic world produced, of the ancient philosophies of Greece and Rome, of the technical advances they carefully transcribed and made freely available to everyone, regardless of religious bigotry.

You are not better Aroces than these people.... your entire comfortable lifestyle is testament to their (not your) achievements.

true. this isn't the 50's anymore. Can't go back to being isolationists as much as we want to . the door to globalization started when Nixon stood on the wall of China. Tech has come too far to keep us isolated anymore. it's naive to think we can put that cat back in the bag.

(This doesn't make an excuse for greed of big corporations to abandon people in search of higher profits among poorer countries. while great for them short term it's a catch 22. in the long run. take your product being made at 15 an hour by an American to China for 50 cents an hour ...... and wonder why no one in America can afford your product that your still charging the same for. those workers whom your paying a pittance can't afford it nor can those out of work or now working at far less before you jumped ship for greeds sake. Like Dick DeVos did with products for his Amway( a rip off) company here in Michigan. Laid off 4000 workers permanently , opened shop in China , and returned the products to sell at the same price here in Michigan before he outsourced . And wonders why he lost the run for Governor. among his many other greedy practices.)

To return to the topic of this thread.....

I have just listened to Obama's entire speech again, it is a considered, expertly delivered monologue. It atempts to mend those fences torn down by 8 years of Bushism and was received by an enthusiastic gathering of nearly quarter of million people!!!!

Die Welt makes an interesting point, McCain could never had engendered that kind of support in Berlin, he might have filled a small hall B)
