Bush Bans State Department Officials From Obama Rally

Posted July 24, 2008 | 08:45 AM (EST)

In a flagrant political act, the State Department has barred its employees from attending Sen. Barack Obama's speech in Berlin tonight. Under the pretense that he is maintaining political neutrality, the Washington Post reported today, State Department Undersecretary for Management Patrick F. Kennedy has interpreted the Foreign Affairs Manual in the most restrictive way, claiming that he is ensuring that foreign service officials will remain untainted by a "partisan political act." (Spouse and family members, however, have generously been excluded from this ruling.) The U.S. embassy, which is headed by ambassador Robert Timken, a businessman and crony of George W. Bush's from Ohio, who is widely reviled in Germany for his ignorance of foreign affairs, has instructed officials not to attend the rally. The American Foreign Service Association has complained about the edict but there's not enough time to dispute it. Funny that.

The truth is that there would probably be few better opportunities for embassy officials to get a feel for the views of the Germans by mixing with them during the rally. Of course, the sentiments expressed by Germans, who worship Obama as much as they loathe George W. Bush, might not be ones that the administration is eager to hear.

Indeed, the administration has a long and tawdry record of trying to browbeat government agencies into submission, whether it's the CIA or the Centers for Disease Control. The State Department is perhaps highest on the list of conservatives and neocons who see it as the center of disloyalty and treachery. But this latest action represents a new low. If it's going to these lengths, the Bush administration must be really worried about Sen. John McCain's prospects.

and of course bush pushed for this. Otherwise there would be a history of it. it is however on the books that an official take neither side and to remain neutral. that I can agree with and yet ................

Bush Appointee Breaks the Law While Helping McCain Fundraise

By: SilentPatriot on Sunday, June 22nd, 2008 at 4:50 PM - PDT

Looks like McCain’s maverick ways are rubbing off on others and causing them to do some crazy things… like, say, break the law.

WaPo:

A Canadian newspaper reported Thursday that Friday’s scheduled $100-a-plate luncheon speech by Sen. John McCain in Ottawa was organized in part by U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins, a former South Carolina lawmaker whom President Bush appointed in 2005.

Democrats pointed out the article late Thursday night, and alleged that Wilkins’s actions could be construed as a violation of the Hatch Act, which prohibits many kinds of political activities by government employees.

This ties in nicely with Scott McClellan’s testimony today. The main theme of his book is that this White House operates in a “permanent campaign mode,” where every action they take is politically calculated to help GOP electoral prospects. We saw it with the clueless Lurita Doan and we see it now with David Wilkins: It doesn’t matter if there are laws on the books prohibiting certain conduct; if it helps get Republicans elected, do it. And it appears that if it helps fill McCain’s empty coffers, he doesn’t have much of a problem with it either.

Maybe you should have read the act first.

The original Act forbids intimidation or bribery of voters and restricted political campaign activities by federal employees. It prohibits using any public funds designated for relief or public works for electoral purposes. It also forbids officials paid with federal funds from using promises of jobs, promotion, financial assistance, contracts, or any other benefit to coerce campaign contributions or political support.

The most restrictive measure was brought about by Republicans in the Senate. It dictates that persons below the policymaking level in the executive branch of the federal government must not only refrain from political practices that would be illegal for any citizen but must abstain from "any active part" in political campaigns.

An amendment on July 19, 1940 extended coverage to state and local employees whose salaries include any federal funds. This amendment also set an annual ceiling of $3 million for political parties' campaign expenditures and $5,000 for individual campaign contributions.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatch_Act_of_1939

According to this both parties are breaking this law.

I say they should not attend either if it's McCain or Obama when they are suppose to be at work. If they want to go check it our after office hours then that should be fine.

Wisconsin Democrats strip woman of delegate position for saying she will vote for McCain

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin Democrats on Friday ousted a delegate to their national convention for saying she would vote for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain in November.

Embarrassed by a defection in their ranks, the Wisconsin Democratic Party's administrative committee voted 23-0 to strip Debra Bartoshevich of her status as a delegate to the Denver convention next month.

Bartoshevich was elected by party activists as a pledged delegate for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton from the 1st Congressional District in southeastern Wisconsin. But after Clinton dropped out of the race, Bartoshevich told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel she would support McCain over Democratic Sen. Barack Obama.

The June comments from Bartoshevich, a 41-year-old nurse and mother of two from Waterford, were seized on by the McCain campaign as evidence of his appeal to former Clinton backers. Within hours, the Wisconsin Democratic Party passed a resolution at its state convention supporting a challenge of her credentials with the national committee.

BUT!!!

That is correct procedure. A Party worker works for the party not an individual within that party.

This person strikes me as a wannabee politician and will use anything, any ploy, to get National recognition. Loyalty is to the party, irrespective, no doubts.

How can people change Party allegiance so easily? It is beyond comprehension...

So many times I have seen or read reports that because these "Babies" dont get get their way , they totally change their political perspective... why do they join any party when all they want is their own way????
