On a day in which Obama will be talking about energy independence in Lansing, Mich., the Democratic candidate for president has launched a frontal attack on his Republican rival for accepting campaign contributions from the oil companies at a time of record oil industry profits and painful gas pump prices. McCain's collections from the oil industry soared after he announced his support for off-shore oil-drilling, independent research groups have pointed out. The Obama ad totals it up: $2 million for McCain from the oil industry.

"Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets,'' says the narrator of Obama's new ad, the screen noting $143 billion in profits for the industry. "Now big oil is filling Jjhn McCcain's campaign with $2 million in contributions.'' The ad touts Obama's support for a "windfall profits tax'' on the industry, promising to turn that money into $1,000 "rebates'' for each family. Obama: "A president who will stand up for you.''

For its part, the Republican National Committee is "celebrating'' Obama's 47th birthday today with the delivery of "gifts'' to American newsrooms - a tire gauge, symbolic of Obama's suggestion that motorists should inflate their tires more to ensure greater fuel economy.

The McCain campaign, calling off-shore oil-drilling part of a solution to long-term energy needs that should help alleviate the price of gas in the short run, slams Obama for opposing it - though Obama, over the weekend, suggested that he could support some form of drilling as part of the negotiations for a broader piece of energy legislation that lessens the country's dependence on oil. McCain, like Obama, proposes the development of alternative sources of energy as well, with McCain supporting construction of more nuclear power plants.

thought I'd put this up as a fyi

Obama's "contributions" have been small incraments from some "employees". Not executives like McCain's. If a guy who works behind the counter at a Shell station contirbuted $5 to Obama's campaign, that is NOT taking money from big oil. No matter how much you try to spin it that way.
