How accurate was the mayan calendar

8 posts in this topic

Hello I was just wondering how accurate the Mayan calendar compared to our modern day calendar (gregorian). I heard it was only a few minuets off but I cant seem to find a good source online.

If you are really interested I would recommend reading "Fingerprints of the Gods" by Graham Hancock which has some good information on the Mayans and their calendar and how close it is to ours.

From what I remember of the book, (and it was quite some time ago that I read it) but you are correct and the Mayan Calendar is nothing more than a few minutes off of constallations and all sorts of other things.

Makes you wonder what's gonna happen is 2012 eh?

What solar alignment, Louie?

Their calendar was more accurate than ours because theirs was a day to day calendar instead of a year to year. Also, it incorporated the cycles of Venus while ours is only based on a year of 365.25 days.

Yeah, this I've heard of but it seems no big deal to me.

The Earth aligns with the galactic center every year in that the Sun rises through the galactic center (which is what the fuss is about.)

It takes a long time for the day on which this "alignment" occurs to go all the way around the calendar.

2012 is the year it happens to fall on the winter solstice.

Don't see why that would be special.

An ancient Mayan calendar as a simple sample of 364 days divided between 13 months of the year:

364/13 = 28

plus 1 Sacred Day

Calandario This is in tune with our planet.
