Jann Burner: This was a time of Technofetishists and Analgesic Dermadisks, called Derms on the street."Derms" were the vehicle of choice for drug ingestion used in the Land of Meat by the Trendzoids. The Meat Puppets, as they were called by the O-Zoners and The Children of The Sea, were usually addicted to The Wall (the wall sized TV that was illegal to ever turn off!).

With the coming of the earth changes, all drug laws had been rescinded. For two reasons: first because the government could no longer pay to support the hundreds of thousands of people in prisons for drug offenses and secondly, because the public was in such a state of panic at the recent geological earth changes that the authorities figured people should be able to self medicate to relieve stress.

Although drugs were legal there was not much of an abuse problem since creative suicide was encouraged and science figured how to regulate serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. Turns out drugs never were the problem, it was their effect on the neurotransmitters in the brain: serotonin (down & in) and dopamine (up & out). These were the brain receptor chemicals that pretty much controlled and motivated human behavior.

Dopamine is a biogenic amine, which slows transmission of nervous impulses from the CNS to the muscles, L-dopa is often used in certain nervous system disorders.

Serotonin increases the flow of nervous impulses; low Serotonin therefore often used to trigger depression. Now every drug rush was as good as the first time. People were very productive and quite happy....all considered. And those not into drugs were into serious health and serious SEX. Sex, it turns out, was a major release source for dopamine. Sex freaks learned how to regulate their diet so as to ride the pre-orgasmic dopo-wave for hours! Eventually the more talented, began to involve the entire spinal cord and became absolutely Tantric!

Kind of ironic how the old fear of Big Brother popped through to the other side. Now Big Brother was in full gear but nobody gave a ****. It was a society of sex freaks and happy productive druggies. Everyone was an exhibitionist. Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll, as it was and as it always will be. The American Dream had finally touched down.

The great thing about drugs was that whatever your natural bent, under the influence of good drugs, you were better. If you were a teacher and liked to get up and show your stuff, under the right drugs you were awesome, and if you were a more scientific type, under one of the new mind benders you could have the concentration of a brain surgeon and the flash-insight of an Einstein. And conversely if you were a slacker, you could turn "ease" into a four letter word; into an absolute art form and the one thing all drugs had in common was that once suitably high, with controller in hand, seated in front of The Wall, everyone was aces on the Overmind. Long about 2010 the traffic over the Internet had become so dense that it was no longer called the Internet. It was now referred to as The Overmind”.

Drugs were either up/down or in/out or combo designer drugs named after the finest oil colors. Symbols were tattooed on the person's wrists to help Medi-Techs know what they were on. Symbols like an arrow for up/down, a circle with a dot in the middle for "inner drugs" and a dot with four lines radiating out for drugs that were more extroverted in design and intention. This saved many an individual from being overdosed in an ER after an emergency.

Some of the Colors were exquisite for producing ultra fine detail, whereas others brought a pleasing gloss and glaze to the otherwise mundane. Some bordered on sensual madness and some produced a body odor and aura that smelled like money and fame. Whatever frequency you desired, it was available cheap. Now! How exactly did you wish to be today? Up? Down? In? Out? Rich? Famous? Or merely clever and talented? Or any combination. In the end the entire drug industry was supplying paint for your cybernetic canvas so it was quite natural that 21st Century mood drugs were named after colors of artist’s oil paint, for, in the end, that's exactly what they were, paint to guild your personal Lilly. They were bigger than semi-conductors.

They were called simply COLORS, and the places that dispensed them were called Color Bars. And the bar usually was named after what it specialized in. Places and drugs like:

Raw Umber, Rose Madder, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Violet Light, Monochrome Warm, Peach Black, Manganese Blue Phthalo, Cinnabar Green Light, Talens Green Marine...and there was a universal drug solvent, a thinning agent. If you ever ingested too much of a specific color or merely wanted to lighten your load, you put a couple of drops of "Liquin" on your tongue and all was well. The favorite seemed to be a Dopamine/Serotonin mix. The perfect combination. Up/down-in/out, with extreme prejudice. Must be the feeling that God had in his slack moments immediately after creating the universe. It was a seventh day sort of drug. It was called Ultraglow and it gave one a feeling of incredible well being. Even those few, who turned up their nose at using Colors in theory, still often used Ultraglow.

As it turns out Mankind was God's private memory place and nothing could change that. Let everyone play cybernetic painter and live their life in a Tartaric sexual haze. Great! The fact was, mankind finally realized in some deep subterranean way, that it was...God. Not “like God”, or “created in God’s image”, but God. People finally realized (with the help of science and the recent visitations of the Original Aliens) that they were immortal and there was no longer any question of whither man would ever become enlightened. No, this was a foregone conclusion. In a very real sense, it had already happened. All of time was happening NOW. It was one ever present, ever expanding moment and we were just pulling selective "presents" towards us like gifts. Now, the human race, like a family on vacation, was creating interesting distractions and diversions to put between itself and its final destination. Final closure. What was the rush?

This was the dawning of an epoch of true creation such as the world had never seen. If mankind had its way, soon blue collar workers would be designing butterflies and mere housewives would be creating extravagant species of multicolored birds. Children would soon be creating holographic Web Zones on the Overmind that could easily have been once called Civilization. The human mind, which had been in near vertical evolutionary trajectory for the past couple of hundred of years, was now beginning to flower. The fallout was a fountain of creative intention raining out in all directions.

Like a stone dropped from a heavenly hand, the arc this stone was traveling was beyond our measure and in the final analysis could not ever be anything but true.

Awesome stuff. It was a good read, a weird read at that, but still a good read. I naturally assume it takes place in a 1984-sorta world, but with a different outcome: instead of pure abstinence, there's a whole lotta lovin' goin' on.
