Floating down the stairs

Do you remember the stories of the kid that dressed up like superman and jumped out a 2 story window and died? Can anyone confirm that story?

Memories of stairs and hallways like that are usually just childhood dreams. I've always had dreams as a kid of my bed spinning really fast and then I would wake up.

That's right. Grasp at straws now. Certainly no kid could ever tell the difference between a dream and waking reality once they wake up. And even if by a small chance they couldn't, common sense says they'd realize it was a dream as they got older.

Imo, these memories aren't "real". They may have happened, but are being remembered differently than they actually occurred. Stairs are often seen as dangerous places for kids (and adults too), so I think it would be reasonable to say that some of us want to connect a kind of "mystery" to them. We've all gotten hurt on the stairs before (*cough*, some of us more than others <img src="http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />), and I think it's within our nature to want to remember our experiences different. Seems strange, considering that stairs are everyday, mundane things, but every kid I've ever met has had such a strange fascination with them. They're the only toy a kid needs. For most of my childhood I played on the stairs like they were the only things I ever had (they were the only place I played in the house in general, with toys and without). I personally don't remember ever having "floated" down the stairs (I never, ever, walked on stairs until I was about ten, I always crawled up and down them because, guess what, I was terrified of falling. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />)

Anyway, summing it all up: stairs are a mystical place for a lot of kids. I think it's natural that we'll, at some time or another, want to connect a mystery with them, in some way, regardless of whether or not it really happened.

See above.

Wel, this thread was started in 08 and the OP has since left, but here's my story anyway. It had to do with stairs, but not going down them.

From the time I was 7-12 I was obsessed with basketball, both the NBA and shooting around with my friends and myself. My grandmother was very lenient so whenever it had gotten too dark or too cold/hot outside, I'd be allowed to play inside with a hoop on a closet door as long as a use a toy ball instead of an actual basketball. Once at around 8 I'm doing my nightly thing. My mom had went to her boyfriend's and my grandmother was reading a newspaper. So after about 10 minutes I go for a layup and as my feet leave the ground it was if gravity stopped working and everything around me slowed down. I touch the top of an at least 10 foot door and with ease safely land at the 2nd to last step on the stairs next to the closet to the upper level of my home. As I'm standing on the stairs, my mouth is open and I couldn't believe what happened. I'm still in awe to this day. Like I said, my grandmother had a newspaper in front of her face so nobody saw me.

Let me debunk you skeptics before you waste your time. The following are 2 things I no doubt expect some to grasp at straws for as Fell and Ebonykrow have shown us.

"BUT WATE! U MUST HAVE BEEN TALLLL!" Seriously, if I was one of those 5/6 foot kids growing up before I turned 13 do you really think that I would be that dense to go out of my way to post this story? If anything, I'm a short guy. Was always about around a foot shorter than my peers.

"BUT WATE!" U MUST B ON SUM SORT OF MEDASIN 4 DELOOSHUNS! OR U PASABLY SUFUR FROM SEZURS AND ACTULY R NOT PROPORLY MEDIKATED!" As with my last point, I wouldn't bother posting if I was.

But if it hasn't happened to you skeptics first hand, there must be a "logical, scientific explanation".

I have the distinct childhood memory of pitching headfirst over the railing that runs around the top our front stairs and falling in slow motion straight to the bottom, possibly hurting my arm bad in the process.

I think I remember slipping past the lower stair railing and landing off to the side of stairs, but it's almost impossible to do that without hitting the railing unless you did some fancy twisting. Obviously it must've been a dream but the recollection was persistent enough for years that I had to ask my mother whether anything like that had actually happened to me.

"logical, scientific explination" warning: it is possible for people to acomplish amazing feets of self propulsion, just watch cirqe du soliel, sometimes untrained people, mostly young people because they have not yet accepted such things as physically impossible, can pull off these amazing jumps, it is very rare that this happens, and you are fortunate to have landed safely, but this does happen sometimes, and it is not in any way paranormal, the slowing down would have come from the adrenaline rush such a feat would produce

No, I do remember falling down them a lot. I have other strange memories concerning stairs and hallways... or did I dream them?

I always fell down steps for seemingly no reason when I was a kid. I wasn't pushed-I don't remember tripping, but it happened a lot.

Floating down several steps to my basement growing up happened to me on several occassions when I was 3 to 6 years old. This would happen in the middle of the afternoon while wide awake playing. If my mother was in the basement doing laundry, I would run down to her when she called or if I wanted to ask her for something. There were two flight of stairs, the second having the most steps. And from the landing or midway, I would feel almost like someone picked me up and carried me. I don't know if my mother ever saw it or not. I did bring it up to her as an adult, but she didn't want to talk about it. I know I wasn't dreaming.

These are dreams that you had as a child that later in life you got confused as having actually occurred, many of these things have happened to me and I swear I remember it happening but realize it is totally impossible and must have been a dream I had had at one time.

not necessarily dreams, remember studies show alot of your early memories are either wild inaccurate if not completely fabricated. its also really freaking easy to create false memories about your childhood (see this http://www.spring.org.uk/2008/02/implanting-false-memories-lost-in-mall.php )

people remember floating down the stairs probably because other either 2 of the above reasons or maybe a lucid dream but going on how inaccurate early memories are its probably even if it was a dream its not remembered correctly

Wow... I have this exact memory. It's very vivid. But, when I stand at the top of the steps, I know there's no way I could jump down all the way, much less as a little kid.

I am so glad I found this forum. I finally have a place to share my experience with people who had similar ones. When I was 4 to about 6 years old I remember floating down the stairs. I was always very awake. Many times I would just stand at the top of the stairs hoping I could make it happen, but it was always something very random that I couldn't force. Till this day I can still remember how wonderful it felt.

My sister claims that as a child she floated down the stairs once. I never thought it would be something others would recall as well.

I dream about floating down stairs all the time. These dreams are incredibly vivid, they almost seem like memories to me.

I know this is an old post I'm replying to, but it's amazing that as a child I had an identical experience.

(1) I used to play the game where I tried to see how many steps I could jump down and land at the bottom (used to manage about 6 or 7 steps as a young child IIRC). I used to hit the floor with considerable force!

(2) One time, I decided to go for it big time, and jump off all twelve steps in one go. For some reason, this was in the middle of the night when everyone else was in bed! Instead of jumping down, I glided down slowly, as if levitating about an inch above the stairs and landed on the floor below calmly, slowly and quite safely.

Of course to an adult, this seems very much like a dream and in the cold light of day of course it is just impossible. However, I was always utterly convinced that it really did happen and I really did experience it!

Just glad to read I'm not the only one who this happened to. Didn't realise it was so common.

I think the defining feature of it is that as a child you thought to yourself "No that just wasn't a dream, I know it really happened".

Very strange, and I can't explain it. I'm 38 now and still remember it as vividly as when I was a child.

Oh, and hi all!

Dream! :cat:

Of course, but a very vivid one with a lasting impression. :D

I was just interested to read that others had the pretty much the same experience, particularly the bit about it just seeming so real at the time!

I remembered having dreams as a young child of me standing at the top of the stairs then I would just jump and be at the bottom walking off to the kitchen or something. but then again in other dreams i would be on my bed and it would be "moving" then of course i would wake up and nothing would have changed...

I'm not sure if I've even read this or my mind has just made it up, but aren't children supposed to be fairly good at having lucid dreams?

I think that theory might have potential. A young, developing brain, where dreams and reality are less able to be distinguished.

Wikipedia lists one therapist who believes this is the case. Yet, honestly, it's hard to find one aspect of the mind that one therapist doesn't find a theory for:

Many people report having experienced a lucid dream during their lives, often in childhood. According to Armstrong-Hickey, children seem to have lucid dreams more easily than adults and this ability could decrease with age.[29][unreliable source?] Lucid dreaming is however a learnable skill, though achieving lucid dreams on a regular basis can be difficult.[30] Over time, several techniques have been developed to achieve a lucid dreaming state intentionally.

i dislike stairs because i feel an energy pull around them. kinda like they want me to fall down them. some stairs are worse than others. floating down would be nice.

I remember being a chubby little kid and trying to jump down the stairs with my Batman costume, failing every time. I wish my memories were as good as yours.

I dare every single one of you to try this again, and see what happens. LOL. I guarantee you won't "glide" or "float".

I never had stairs in any of the houses I've lived in so this whole thread just makes me feel left out ;_;

Reading this thread brought back the same exact memory for me of jumping down a flight of wooden steps...then I read the post above and remembered I did not have any stairs in my house either.

Maybe it was just a dream (:

Something similar happened to me when I fell out of a pine tree. I was halfway up or so, but when I fell I didn't hit any branches on the way down and wasn't hurt at all.
