How do the Mayans know if this does happen?

42 posts in this topic

So, how did the Mayans predict what they think will happen on December 21, 2012. On whatever will happen on that day. Did they also say its going to be end of the the world or something else. If anyone knows. Please do tell.

They didn't predict anything. It's new age nonsense to make money.

The only people making predictions are those out to make money off of a calendar from a dead civilization that just so happens to end within our lifetime. There's nothing special about it. The Mayans did not know something we don't. If they were really so knowledgable and able to predict the future, they would have been able to deal with the conquistadores more effectively, don't you think?

They predict a solar eclypse, in their mythology it's the death of the sixth Sun, which is also, in their beliefs, the last Sun. After this eclypse the world will be in eternal darkness. But how can someone believe in this nonsense? It's like people want an apocalypse, so they believe in it.

They didn't.

The Maya didn't make any "predictions" other than myth-based stories and short-term astrological ones to do with crops etc.

The Mayan texts were all but destroyed by the Spanish, save for about 4 "codices", none of which have anything to do with 2012. The only reason we know how the Maya calendar worked was by the carvings left on temples and monuments, that described events (usually to do with conquest) within certain timeframes. From these time frames, the Maya calendar was deciphered.

The only place that ever mentioned 2012, was a carving called Tortuguero 6 which stated:

Bolon Yookte (a creator god)

The Thirteenth 'Bak'tun will be finished

Something Four Ajaw, the Third of Uniiw (K'ank'in).

Something will occur.

Something the something of the Nine something God(s) to the something.

Pretty vague huh.

The monument doesn't even exist anymore - it was destroyed in the building of a factory on the site. Great conservation they have there.

And don't listen to the internet tripe - no other culture anywhere in the world predicted any disaster from 2012, except the British tabloid newspapers talking about the Olympics.

They just didn't feel like continuing the calender.

If you were making a calender, wouldn't you get tired from doing the same thing over and over again?

Each day, Each week, Each month, Each year.

Lets do it again.

xD

Gawd.

The mayans were great astronomers and as I said before the solstice of dec 21 2012 marks the end of the great cycle for them and is a time of celebration. they never predicted the end of the world. where did that even come from?

December 21, 2012.

This is the day that the Earth will be aligned, or equal to, the rest of the galaxy.

December 22, 2012.

On this day, the Earth will be rising above the galaxy.

Like this ____._____ The line represents the galaxy, so see the period as the Earth.

This represents the rise of consciousness.

Therefore, 12/21/12 will be the last day of the concept of time.

That's it. It's the end of the concept of TIME not Judgment Day.

Jeez people ... The earth won't do this :gun: so we won't be doing this :st

Does anyone even have any evidence that the earth aligning with the rest of the galaxy will even, well, have any effect on us?

Given the fact that the galaxy isn't a line, it's difficult for me to understand how the earth can be aligned to it. What's the geometric definition of aligned here? Remember that the Milky Way Galaxy appears in the sky as a large stripe, not a point.

Er...how are two points NOT in alignment?

Let's just ignore for a moment that the Earth is PART of the galaxy, please explain how two points are not aligned.

Yeah, or maybe they got killed off before they could continue the calendar.

Maybe they're just another old culture that we've far surpassed in technology and education. I seriously doubt if they could teach us much in the ways of engineering and tech.

But I'm sure we could learn a lot from them philosophically.

Why do people think that ancient civilisations were somehow more spiritual or philosophical than we are today?

What exactly could the Maya, a violent, warmongering, environmentally damaging peoples possibly teach us?

Good point. There is this misguided notion that ancient civilizations are somehow more enlightened than modern society. This is a view held by those that take a revisionist point of view and ignore all the ways in which those societies were no different than our own in terms of enlightenment, and sometimes far less enlightened. There really is no comparison. Every civilization has both positives and negatives to offer in their philosophies/customs.

I wouldn't say that one civilization could learn nothing from another, but to automatically assume that being ancient equates to more wise than we are today is really not looking at the big picture.

Wholeheartedly agree. Except perhaps that if we do not stop being violent, warmongering and environmentally damaging we will end up the same as them.

Great, we have thousands of calendars all over the place for future generations to misinterpret.

Not to mention a bunch of "prophets" making all types of looney predictions.

We should leave a note for future generations. :P

They didn't "predict" anything. They just got tired of extending their calender farther and farther into the future, especially when they had to carve the darn thing in stone.

I have a Universal Calender, published in 1850, which ran out in 1950.

Guess what, the Earth didn't end in 1950 just because "the calendar ran out."

Maybe it did and this is the afterlife.
