4 out of 11 Bodies ID'ed!

Authorities on Friday released the name of a fourth victim found last week in or around the home of registered sex offender.

The family of Nancy Cobbs, 43, reported her missing to the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority police in April, but did not file a report with Cleveland police until Monday, according to the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office.

Anthony Sowell, who in 1990 pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted rape and served 15 years in prison, was arrested Saturday, two days after police discovered the first bodies at his home. He faces five counts of aggravated murder, rape, felonious assault and kidnapping, police said, and was denied bond at a hearing Wednesday.

Police have discovered the bodies of 10 people and skull of an 11th victim. Remains of six of the victims were found inside the home and five outside, police said. The skull was wrapped in a paper bag and stuffed into a bucket in the basement, police said.

Previously, the coroner's office said it had identified the bodies of Tonia Carmichael, 52; Telacia Fortson, 31; and Tishana Culver, 31.

Police initially went to Sowell's home last week to follow up on a rape accusation. Last month, neighbors reported seeing a naked woman fall from the second floor, but no charges were filed.

He probably thought he didn't want to go back to jail so killing them was a sure thing to stop them from talking.

Elven kills in under 4 years, kind of hard not to notice and yet they only discovered this guy by accident.

Alleged Ohio serial killer rare among mass killers

CLEVELAND – Authorities say Anthony Sowell lured women into his home in a busy neighborhood, killed them — most by strangulation — and scattered their remains throughout the inside and buried some in the backyard.

Such brazenness defies logic, but experts identify a narrow subcategory of serial killers, including the 1893 Chicago Fair killer, Dr. H.H. Holmes, and Milwaukee cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer, who hunt from home.

"These types are so rare that you can't make a summary estimation as to why or what went wrong or anything," said Robert Keppel, a national serial-killer expert who investigated serial killer Ted Bundy in Washington state in the 1970s.

"There's just not a whole lot of these folks running around the world," he said.

Sowell had the perfect lair.

His home and backyard — a burial site for five victims — were shielded by an empty home to the left and the windowless brick wall of a sausage company on the right.

Anytime the stench of decaying bodies blew over the street, neighbors blamed the meat processing next door.

His house stood out only because it was one of the nicest on a block dotted by homes with peeling paint and broken windows, some of them vacant.

It looked safe.

Sowell often sat on the front steps, sipping beer out of a bottle and greeting residents passing by on their way to the corner store that was just steps away for alcohol, snacks and cigarettes.

Neighbors say he'd offer a few the chance to get high.

Sowell's alleged approach reflects an obvious point, said forensic psychologist N.G. Berrill: the potential role of mental illness in such unusual behavior.

"The fact that they would dirty their own nest, as it were, is peculiar to me and suggests a level of mental illness or sickness," said Berrill, director of the New York Center for Neuropsychology and Forensic Behavioral Science.

With todays high tech stuff one would figure such crimes cannot happen. Shows you how wrong we can be. Such crimes can occur especially if the neighbors don't try to know what is going on in their neighborhood. Or worse refuse to accept the fact such crimes can and do occur.

We are having an increase in gang drive-bys and our authorities at every level have their hands tied because of cut backs. Last year an eight year old boy was shot in the head and died; the shot went through the exterior wall of his bedroom.

There were 7 witnesses who gave police everything they needed for arrests; which occured less than 36 hours after the boys death. Come time for the trial and every witness changed their story to the extent the gang bangers were freed!! The murderers marched in triumph right down the center of the street where the boy had lived flashing gang signs.

There are two choices: don't ask, don't care or don't see, never know.

We continue to do both.

So true unfortunately! It amazed me how even when those missing girls were being held at Ariel Castro's house in Cleveland for ten years, no one in the neighborhood - or even his friends and what little times his family members were at his house, questioned the fact that his windows were boarded up. For TEN years. That's just creepy as hell! Granted, not much can be done if he's not visibly breaking the law, but as a neighbor I would be extremely weary of him and extra cautious of his every move. I don't care how nice he seemed. There had to have been something suspicious enough within that time period to raise more than a brow. There were a couple of things left un-investigated as far as I read about, but ultimately it was ignored.

In Sowells case as well it seems they both displayed sociopathic behavior: charming, high functioning, but ruthless and calculating - which can be difficult to detect. .Sowells neighborhood didn't seem like one in which people would really look out for each other, but then again, doesn't seem like there are many of those left anymore. :/

Well this is a bit of a necropost... But interesting as the topic hasn't come up in a while. And there is some fairly fresh news on Anthony Sowell.

For a bit more information and background about this, here's Murderpedia: http://murderpedia.org/male.S/s/sowell-anthony.htm

All of the victims were identified in 2009. He was sentenced to death in 2011.

The new tidbit is from January of this year. Ohio decided to put Sowells death sentence on indefinite hold because Sowell keeps filing appeals: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/01/ohio_supreme_court_puts_anthon.html

I know! Just finished watching 'The Making of A Murderer' and in scouring more info being led to all sorts of sites, topics and links I never knew about.

Did a report on Serial Killers eons ago and the psychological profiles always fascinated me. Seeing how Sowell had a horrific upbringing, a statement he made was a sad but chilling one: 'Abused children grow up too.' Certainly doesn't excuse his heinous crimes though.

In reading the murderpedia page, his behavior from friendly and helpful to violent seemed almost Jekyl and Hyde-like. No remorse.

Wow...had no idea he was still appealing. Unbelievable.
