Radical Owl Posted May 5, 2010 #4 Share Posted May 5, 2010 The site was founded more than 2,000 years ago, and being the highest point in the region, was probably a "sacred mountain" for thousands of years prior. The heads of the statues were pulled down by angry Roman soldiers (most likely -- another story blames earthquakes). In the novel Something Coming, the head of Antiochus appears back on its throne and is used as a sign of the mountain's reawakening. The history of Nemrut as a symbol of unity between East and West is used in the plot about a modern-day peace movement -- and about a notorious, brilliant, possibly mad king (Antiochus Epiphanes, who engineers his rebirth. It's a mystery all of the way to the end, very entertaining, and the Amazon reviews praise it.
acriasis Posted February 4, 2013 #5 Share Posted February 4, 2013 I wonder if this site is linked to the ruins of 'Gobekli Tepe' which is south of 'Nemrut Dag' about 60 miles and just east of a village called 'Orencik' about 1 1/2 miles. Perhaps Gobekli Tepe was a spiritual center for the inhabitants of the ancient civilization Nemrut Dag.
