I am a fan of Gordon Ramseys – The F Word...

Recently watched the restaurant challenge a month or so ago...hoping to pick up some good tips

I saw this restaurant – the pheasant ..as contenders for the F Word challenge

They cooked up what looked absolutely gorgeous.. – Venison ...I have never tried deer meat before

Clips shows Gordon going on the hunt for deer ...and these deer were killed in the most humane way possible.. So I had a keen interest...I wouldn’t mind going on a deer hunting trip..(Not In a Robert De Niro fashion lol.)..but I am a crap shot..I’d wind up shooting it in the rear end LOL or hitting a tree and it runs away!!

The restaurant – (the pheasant) operates in a good way for all – many farmers hunt their animals and bring their kill to the restaurant and the chef cooks it all up for them ..free of charge.. I think that’s a good idea...

So enough of my rambling... the point to this thread is... Foods we have never tried but would love to try

I would love to try – Venison... actually I wouldn’t mind going on a hunting trip and see if I can get my own kill it (something I have never done before in my life)...but let someone else clean it out.. LOL...and then cook it up myself..that would be fantastic

I can't really think of anything I haven't had that I'd like to try... I think I've tried most everything. haha. Including venison (we have a restaurant here my neighborhood that sells it quite regularly) It's a .... strong flavor... rather gamey, but when cooked right, it's ok, I'd eat it again!

Venison is kind of tough if I remember correctly (or maybe that's just elk). I have a lot of things I've wanted to try: Snakes, clay, honey ants. If I ever travel to Africa I imagine I can try all of them, though I think very few civilizations eat clay

OMG bro you gotta try Central Oz Honey ants.,. and they are soo good for you too. Lizard tastes like chicken sort of. I totally know what snakes eat so i aint going near em. Blehk. The Ants from up north taste like lemon, well ya dont eat the whole thing just his bottom. High energy.

Sea Urchin I've had at japanese restaurants ... and Razor clams are a local delicacy here! A lot of families have traditions of taking a weekend to go "Razor Clam shooting" you actually dig them up with a tool called a "clam gun" LOL. Razor clams are good, they make the best chowder, otherwise they're sorta rubbery. Related to the razor clam is the Goeduck; another local delicacy where I live. They're positively pornographic looking. LOL. They are meatier than razor clams, and when cooked right, are delicious!

come to Seattle and visit, and I'll take ya razor clam shooting. LOL.

I don't think we have mud crabs... if I'm not mistaken, those are warm water crabs and we don't have any warm water here ... anywhere. LOL. we do have King crab, Dungoness crabs (my fave) and these funny little smaller hermit crab things that I don't think you eat. We're also really well known for our Mussles here. Penn Cove Mussles are known world wide and are quite a delicacy. I used to live fairly close to Penn Cove, mussles grew on my dock in front of the house and i used to just go grab a handful and cook 'em up. I've met people that were wildly jealous LOL.

Even though I don't like mushrooms, I sort of want to try truffles. The very expensive variety

Venison can be very tender, the first time I tried it was in Germany on holidays. My mum failed to tell me that I had eaten "Bambi" till we got home.

But is was very lovely.

Hey Whisk, maybe we could get some truffles from that farm in Victoria, go halves and have Curtis.,. :wub: cook up something good with them.

Ive heard truffles are like $100 bucks a kilo!

I don't think so... but I beleive that geoduck is suppose to be an aphrodisiac. LOL. They're just so gross looking. LOL. but, honestly, they do taste pretty good. LOL.

I've had both white (from Oregon) and black truffles (from France). Generally served over pate. They're ok... honestly, not a ton of flavor as far as I can tell. haha.

We get a lot of Kobe beef here since we're a major shipping port for Japan (and Kobe is our "sister city" in the far east)... It's well... delicious. It's high price is well worth it!

In all fairness, I've traveled a lot, and my ex-husband, before he went into software, was a trained chef. I've had the opportunity to try a lot of foods in a lot of places and prepared by some outstanding chefs. I consider myself lucky in that respect.

One of my favorite delicacies that many people never get a chance to try is wild-caught steelhead fish. It's amazing. It's a lot like Alaska salmon, but it's actually an "ocean trout". It's very meaty, with a very deep pink flesh, and a slighly sweet gamey taste. There is no commercial fishery for wild Steelhead so you have to know an avid sports fisherman who can actually get lucky enough to catch one to taste it. Some people fish for Steelhead all their lives and never hook more than 2 or 3 in a lifetime. My ex-husband was obsessed with steelhead and had the highest catch rate in the state for like 6 years running. He'd bring home 4 or 5+ a year. Always a treat of magnificent proportions!

The traditional way to catch Razor clams in the UK is to sprinkle a little salt down there blow hole (burrow) they come flying out.

Would you say it is like steak - can be tough depending on how it's cooked?

As for me I dont know I have never tried deer meat before... but in lapland they eat it as often as we would eat cow meat.. even as burgers

I have had crab before, tasted a bit rubbery lol...but please don't ask me what kind it was, I cant remember

See I think all reptiles are beautiful creatures...so I wouldnt be interested in eating them.....what am I saying.. Deers are lovely animals too and said previously I wouldnt mind hunting them and cooking them up...yup I am a hypocrite

Venison is my favorite meat, second only to alligator. The trick to venison is not to eat it too well done. I love everything well done, but venison is one of the few things I like a bit pink in the middle.

I'm intrigued by ostrich meat. It seems a bit wrong because my husband's cousin in South Africa has a pet ostrich named Fiona that is in all the family pictures, and she's adorable, but as long as it's not her, I'm okay with it. I hear ostrich is very tasty.

Oooo, definitely try rattlesnake! It's really good! Best when barbequed! Tender, almost sweet meat. We have buffalo burgers at work, it's almost too lean to be tasty to me.... but I know lots of people who love it. I've also tried ostrich, I thought it was a bit greasy, but it could have been just the way it was prepared. Alligator I've tried, but it wasn't good... but I'm pretty sure it was because of the way it was prepped. it was sorta swampy tasting, but I hear it's not suppose to be. LOL.

It's amazing stuff. You know that if I'm eating it pink, it's got to be something special, because I like meat to have the consistency of a hocky puck. But you can't do that to venison. It ruins it.

That swampy taste isn't supposed to be there. There is a hint of "is it fish or is it chicken" to alligator, but it should never be overwhelmingly swampy. That swampy taste you're describing is what put me off frog's legs forever. I can't even think too hard about them or I get ill.

Ostrich is greasy? I don't know how I imagined it, but I always thought it would be kind of like turkey, where you would be in danger of it drying out. Still dying to try it.

I love buffalo. I had it a couple of times and really like that it's so lean, but I'm weird.

I had a big flounder sushi which was almost a mini filet of raw fish. Meh.

Eel sushi was weird - rubbery and crunchy.

But the worst food ever, on the whole face of the planet is Ludefisk. I will stand by that statement till the day I die. LOL
