Unicorns

20 posts in this topic

It's stupid, I know. We take unicorns as mythical one-horned horses that only live in fairy tales and stories, but could they have been more than just a myth. I'm not much of a specialist at this subject, but I'd love to hear your opinions one these creatures.

Here is some information about unicorns:

The Unicorn was a mystical creature described in ancient Greek and Roman myths. They were placed among virgin saints and said to be an emblem of purity. Though it would fight savagely when cornered, it could be tamed by a virgin's touch. During the Middle Ages, and even later, the unicorn's horn (as it was alleged to be), because of its fabled purity, was a popular ingredient for medicines and for alchemical reactions. Potentates and pontiffs obtained reputed unicorn's horn because it was considered a strong protection against poison. The horn was also believed to ward off stomach trouble and epilepsy. The Unicorn is found throughout world legends.

Cryptozoologists have been alerted to sightings of the unicorn throughout the world, but especially in India, where it was once thought to be a native beast.

TIMELINE OF SIGHTINGS

>:(   Sorry, but I must clarify something.  The original post, she was asking if, basically, the Unicorn was a Myth.  We all know it too be.  So why would you even conceed to write her and say that it's horn was used for potions, because of it's purity.  You are reading that from a fairy tale, correct?  I mean, there has never been any concrete evidence of this creature, and it comes originally from ancient beliefs, that much you said is correct.  Then how can you explain it being used for remedies of any kind??  I mean, you were kidding right?  Does anybody else see where I am going with this??  How can something be a fable, but yet be used for potions to cure whatever ails you??  Teresa :-*

Teresa

Reminds of the discussions on the Philadelphia Experiment Magikman, SaRuMaN and myself used to have. I had quite a lengthy post explaining in detail about the legend of the experiment without stating what I believe.

I was then rebuked by Magikman(you're not surprised by that are you?)for writing about such an elaborate hoax until I explained that I was just writing the details in case someone wanted a bit more information on the subject.

Although Dowdy didn't specifically state his beliefs one way or the other on the subject, he was probably explaining about the legend of unicorns in more detail, including a lot of famous people who allegedly seen them, just in case someone might be interested, since the topic had already been brought up.

:-*  Nothing surprises me about Magikman.   :-*

I still must say that I read it pretty thoroughly, and still came to the same conclusion about what you said.  Sorry.   :'(

It is information that is still, undeniably incorrect.  You say during the Middle Ages and later, it was used, because of it's FABLED PURITY,  for medicines and alchemical reactions; right??  I mean you did say that, Am I reading this monitor upside down???  I don't mean to sound crass, well maybe just alittle???  Must be something about me :-*  Just making sure that fables stay away from reality. Really now boys, is that sooo bad?

Unicorns, like many thing in the middle ages, were made up. Why? i don't know. They were like vampires, werewolfs, witches, wizards and with all those topics you can find information on them. eg. i got a book a home that tells you how to become werewolfs and it told why and how people became vampires. They are all not real but they are what people thought at the time about vampires and werewolfs. people thought when you were bitten by a vampire you would become one aswell. it was their beliefs at the time and it's the same with unicorns. it's what people believed the unicorns horn will do at the time but today we are much smarter then to believe of such impossible creatures. everything that was blamed on demons in the middle ages is now blamed on U.F.O's and Aliens. like crop circles.

Ala,

I think that the myth of Unicorns is a nice story, but its not true.  It would be cool if there was such a thing as a Unicorn.  Im not a specialist in the subject either.  I really dont know that much about them.

If you think about it,like Dowdy said, even the myth was valued for the horn.  So if it were real, it would be extinct now!!! :-/

I am one to believe that once upon a time Unicorns roamed the Earth. However i dont believe they flew or had any magic powers. They were just a normal horse with a horn on its head. Many other creatures have horns why not a horse. I believe that these creatures got wiped out many many years ago because of the value of their horn.

Dowdy gave us a list of different people of different countries in the past who saw this beast. Do you need anymore proof.

And for those who think its just a creature of mythology, i am one to believe that some mythology could be true. Who says 2000 years into the future where not going to look back on Religions of this world and think it was all a myth. An example of a story that is a myth. The knot that could not be untied, a Greek story of a knot that nobody could untie and then Alexander the Great came along and cut it with his sword and said look i did it. How could this story be a myth if Alexander the Great existed??

Stories change through time (Chinese wispers)and get exagerated. This is mythology for you (old testament).

I agree with you about Myths being varied, from culture to culture, but to say that people from different spans of the world have 'seen' these creatures??  Yes, the answer to your question is, I would definately need more proof than just word of mouth.  Now think about that, if 15 'credible' people said they saw a pig with wings, would you just believe it, because not only one person said that they had seen it??  I am a 'show me' sort of person, so until a Unicorn bites me in the butt, I will think nothing more of it then a magical story that was told numourous times to me as a child; as in many cultures....  Really, you need to start seeing things through your own eyes, believe what you see, not what you are told.  If you are looking for some good stories; with my overactive imagination, I am sure that I could give you a couple of good ones.  And, perhaps, even convince you that they are real...  It is called 'the power of persuasion, some have this talent more than others....  I am not dogging you, just don't be so gullible....  Reese :-*

Teresa,

i am not gullible about the Unicorns, what i wrote is what i believe. I dont believe they existed because the creatures were sighted by 15 people. Thats just telling me that people claim to have seen them.

Who says other people didnt see Unicorns 5000 years ago, like peasents. The people that claim to have seen them were famous and powerful people of their time, thats why it was recorded and we know about it.

Anyway how are you going its nice to be back.

:-*  I am doing just great, thanks for the concern.

However, to just get you one more good time.  How do you kow that the great people of power back in the 1600's or earlier did not have some sort of dellusional, split personality disorder of some sort.  I mean we are in the age now, where practically everything has a logical explanation.  And, at a time when people with these 'problems' where held a level above all others'. Just ponder that a bit, you ofcourse don't have to think of it as anything more than my unbias opinion.

Hey Homer....... :-*

TEST

Thats what I thought. This thread also has a bug, the posts Cerberus wrote didn't appear until I sent this test post. I'm going to lock it off. If anyone would like to add any thoughts about Unicorns, please start a new thread.
