AdorablyDead Posted December 17, 2010 #26 Share Posted December 17, 2010 I love your avatar Anyway, I'd have to agree with the feral pig theory. But, if I wanted to use my imagination, werewolf came to mind. Thank you! I've wanted to change it but just cannot bring myself to remove David's visage. And werewolf theories FTW...but it was probably a pig ..Or fatass Possum. Hehe.
Rafterman Posted December 17, 2010 #27 Share Posted December 17, 2010 (edited) Perhaps it could have been a couple of really fat **** possums? I read they can make snorting noises, although I do not know how loud. Also if there were a couple of them maybe that was why it seemed to be circling. ...Or not, Ilve only ever seen a possum once...when I ran it over by accident ;_; So I do not know much about them, except that I think they are cute. They're cute alright - until you accidentally corner one and it kicks your ass. Edited December 17, 2010 by Rafterman
UberFastCar Posted December 18, 2010 #28 Share Posted December 18, 2010 I agree with kurethmu that it is more plausible for the creature to be a domestic pig turned feral. Personally I wouldn't live in ANY wooded area w/o a dog around. I'm what you would consider a mountain girl & use my dog(s) as watchers, protectors & yes even bait (no haven't had a dog killed yet TG). I'd rather bring my dog than a gun. Knowing me I'd end up shooting myself in a panic if I was surprised by a bear or pack of wolves. My dogs let me know whenever something is around & they do a good job of keeping wild things at bay. i agree the part of it being human a possibility? nowsheflies Posted January 17, 2011 Author #30 Share Posted January 17, 2011 My bad for not rechecking this thread! It's been about a year since this "sighting" happened and since then...nothing. Nothing at all like what happened that November. I think we can just chalk it up as one of those odd things that happens from time to time but to answer a few questions that were posed: * I'm in Alleghany County VA, a pretty rural place. Lots of woods and not much else. * I think I saw, maybe two meteors that night, not nearly enough to light up anything. I was pretty bummed about that, actually! * Native American legends are plentiful in VA but there's nothing in my specific area. * I did look around for tracks/broken branches the next day but I didn't see anything unusual. To be honest, I think I'd be less afraid of Bigfoot than a cougar stalking me. Yikes! I guess I'll never really know what it was and that's okay. Makes life just a bit more exciting. ncnatve Posted August 21, 2017 #31 Share Posted August 21, 2017 Hate to be that guy, but there are many, many credible (imho) reports by eyewitnesses of two large cryptid types that could explain what you heard...if you are inclined to believe the reports of thousands of eyewitnesses. Those two possible cryptids would be: Bigfoot or Dogman. I don't really care if you don't want to believe, no problem. I'm not going to argue with you. Everyone in upper management of the Forest Service knows they exist...they just keep it away from public knowledge. Just listen to as many eyewitness accounts as I have and take into account the Native American legends describing both these creatures. Both have been seen world wide. In the states, only Hawaii has had no sightings of either. (Which makes sense as it was an isolated volcanic island) For further research, go to https://www.youtube.com/user/DogmanEncounters , a youtube channel of eyewitness and in person stories hosted by Vic Cundiff. He also does Bigfoot Eyewitness Radio https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeFqYe-UpZi_q-vLF_Pwyig Another good resource is Bigfoot Hotspot Radio https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3KbKStZCR3-8QoXOaTPk1A Much of what you described sounds very familiar to me, but if you really think it was a bipedal cougar, then ignore all of this...

ncnatve Posted August 21, 2017 #33 Share Posted August 21, 2017 (edited) Thats ok ChrLzs.....I know your sort and I certainly expected it. Do your thing, but whatever you do, don't listen to those interviews. But yes, I knew your type would be out there just bristling for a fight. I am not going to try to prove anything to you because I can't, not with physical evidence. I get it though. Its all coming from left field for you...I do get it. I would not believe based on my comments either. "I believe stuff after being shown good evidence. The sort of evidence you didn't provide." ChrLzs I would be curious as to what actually rises to the level of 'good' evidence for you in this case. Short of dropping said creatures body on your doorstep, what would qualify as evidence in your mind? Honestly? I'm sure that nothing less would do. For the rest of you, if you take some time and listen to the multiple eyewitness interviews on the sites I have listed, at least you will have something more to think about, no matter what your ultimate conclusion. I have reluctantly become convinced after listening to over 200 personal accounts from the individuals who had them, that both of these creatures do, in fact, exist. These people come from all walks of life, from doctors to construction workers, men and women, boys and girls, rich and poor, college educated and high school dropouts. You can hear the fear in their voices. There is plenty of detail in the interviews and stories and though the vast majority of the encounters have striking similarities regarding physical description to behavior, each story is unique. These encounters are both recent and from decades ago. Unless there are a whole lot of out of work writers and actors trying to pull a fast one, these stories are too detailed and in-depth to be fictional. I have only heard two interviews on these channels that did not sound convincing. And yes, there are hoaxers out there. Still, after hundreds of hours of listening and researching this subject with an open mind, it is my opinion that these people are not lying. I have no proof. I can say that they gain nothing by sharing their stories except for scorn (as evidenced by your response). If there is no upside or benefit of sharing their encounters, and many of these people only report while using their first name or an alias, for fear of losing their jobs or reputations, what do they get from sharing these encounters? The only benefit I can see is that they get a chance to get a very traumatic experience off their chests in an accepting environment, with the hope that others who hear their stories might find relief from the isolation and trauma that such an experience engenders. Until then, ChrLzs, I will leave you with this..... There have been numerous megafauna that for centuries were only known by myth, legend and rumor, but have since been discovered and acknowledged as being real creatures. There were certainly scoffers in the days before these creatures were actually proven to exist and you may be walking in their footsteps. Here is a small list of those now very familiar creatures: http://listverse.com/2010/04/16/10-beasts-that-used-to-be-mythical/ Oh, for giggles, I spoke to a park ranger a week or so ago regarding the possible existence of Bigfoot. He said that:" I have never seen one. Even if I had, I wouldn't admit it" Being a true skeptic sometimes means being skeptical of skepticism. Farmer77 Posted August 21, 2017 #34 Share Posted August 21, 2017 On 5/27/2010 at 3:59 PM, nowsheflies said: Hey, everyone, first time poster here. I joined a couple of years ago and am a constant reader, I'm just a bit quiet. For months now I've been trying to decide if I should post this or not but since summer will be here soon and I expect to be spending more and more time outside I'm going for it. Let me first explain a little about my location. My house is literally surrounded by woods on all sides with a gravel road that cuts through in the front and leads to my driveway. Behind my house the woods go on for miles and miles and at some point goes into national forest land. Several yards down the road my cousin raises cattle and they graze in a small field. I'm way out in the country. Back in November (2009) my fiance and I were laying out in the middle of our yard around 1 A.M. waiting for the Leonid meteor shower to start. It was a cold, clear, and very quiet night. We had been out for probably forty-five minutes or so and I was getting annoyed because I had only seen maybe one meteor and I was cold despite all the blankets I had. Suddenly--I know it's a cliche, but it really did happen all of a sudden--the quiet night was anything but. Something starts crashing through the woods behind us. Anyone who's been in the woods at night knows what that sounds like especially in the fall when there are dry leaves on the ground. Whatever it was comes to the edge of the woods to the edge of the yard and and stops and starts making this God-awful "snorting" sound. Living where I do, I'm used to animal noises and I pretty much know what makes what but this sound chilled my blood. I've never heard anything like it. Then a minute later it stops the snorting sound and it starts walking back through the woods. I turn to my fiance and say "What the %*$# was that??" It's not so much what my fiance said but how he said it. His voice almost had a tremor in it. He sounded scared and just said "I don't know know." Aside from the fact that he's a pretty tough guy and I've never known him to be scared of anything in his life, he's the kind of guy who knows a lot, or at least thinks he does. So for him to be so baffled was unsettling. We can hear the crashing again but this time it's coming from our left. It continues until it's in front of us, then a few seconds later it's to the right. I can't help but say "It's circling us." And it was fast too. I'm terrified at this point and insist we go inside. Fiance says no, I carried all these blankets and pillows out to watch this meteor shower and we're going to watch it. He also tells me to shush so he can listen. It's still crashing around and is behind us again. And I am struck with a thought that makes little tears well up in my eyes. Then my fiance opens his mouth and confirms my thought: "It sounds like it's walking on two legs." I insist on going inside again but the crashing sound fades away and my fiance says it must be gone. It goes quiet again. The rest of the time we were outside was uneventful. The sky eventually became overcast and we couldn't see anything anymore so we gathered up all our stuff and went inside. The next day we immediately went over all the things it could have been. A deer? No, that was in no way at all the sound a deer makes when it "snorts." An escaped bull from the field down the road? I guess it's not out of the realm of possibilites, it's just that those cows are extremely used to people and one time when one did get past the fence it had no problem walking right up to me (I helped, or tried anyway, getting it back). And I'm certain no cows got out that night because we almost always get a phone call asking if any has come up to the house (none ever has). It just didn't sound like a bull snort either. A wild boar? We don't have those in Virginia. I asked my brother who works for the US Forest Service and knows more about wildlife than anyone I know and he not only confirmed that we don't have wild boars but was also puzzled as to what it could have been. A bear? We had an extremely cold winter which started earlier than usual and again my bro said it was highly unlikely to be a bear. So . . . I don't know. What I do know is that I don't scare easily. I love taking walks in the woods at night and I am very familiar with the usual animal (foxes, raccoons, owls, squirrels, even bobcats) sounds and not only was this sound new, it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. There was just something about the very presence that scared the heck out of me. Sorry this was so long and any thoughts are welcome! Great story. I would go with wild boar, I havent read through the thread yet but im sure people have pointed out that those damn things are everywhere at this point, including Virginia. Virginia acts to reduce population of wild pigs, the ‘most invasive animal’ in U.S.

ncnatve Posted August 21, 2017 #36 Share Posted August 21, 2017 Hi Farmer77, I am not an expert on wild boar, but it seems highly unusual and aggressive behavior for an unprovolked prey animal, though they can be aggressive when cornered, wounded or defending itself. Most prey animals try to escape or avoid people unless cornered or sick. The are also 'herd' animals, and this was a solitary creature, so that's unusual. But it could have been a rogue boar. Wild boar certainly exist in the Smokies and Appalachians. However, if they were correct that in regards to it sounding bipedal, that would rule out boar as well.

This is true, and Im not one to dismiss the reports of people's experiences out of hand , I just like to start with the most obvious and work my way back from there towards the lesser likely answers. That said you're right VA is just north of that area of the nation that is having a weird surge in reported dogman sightings
ncnatve Posted August 21, 2017 #38 Share Posted August 21, 2017 Oh, and this.....http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/africa/08/05/congo.gorillas/index.html They (the researchers) were wrong by half regarding the actual number of gorillas in existence.....until they launched a serious expedition based upon an eyewitness report by hunters. 'Acting on a tip from hunters who indicated the presence of gorillas, Rainey said that the researchers trekked on foot through mud for three days to the outskirts of Lac Tele, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the nearest road. "When we went there, we found an astonishing amount of gorillas," said Rainey, speaking from the International Primatological Society Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland.' Lesson: 'You will never find something if you don't look for it' and 'Its stupid to not look for something or dismiss out-of-hand possible evidence, if many people tell you they have seen it'
