Still Waters Posted February 21, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 21, 2011 The world is overdue a ferocious 'space storm' that could knock out communications satellites, ground aircraft and trigger blackouts - causing hundreds of billions of pounds of damage, scientists say.Astronomers today warned that mankind is now more vulnerable to a major solar storm than at any time in history - and that the planet should prepare for a global Katrina-style disaster. A massive eruption of the sun would save waves of radiation and charged particles to Earth, damaging the satellite systems used for synchronising computers, airline navigation and phone networks. Innocence lost Posted February 23, 2011 #7 Share Posted February 23, 2011 Look at the source though its the daily mail. I'm sceptical as to the severity of the solar storms. They do have a reputation of fear mongering
xYlvax Posted February 23, 2011 #8 Share Posted February 23, 2011 My dad's been talking about it for years.. and preparing. Yup, it will be fun.... Not. I'd be made to eat that nasty dehydrated food.

Timothy Posted February 23, 2011 #11 Share Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) The levels of solar activity follow a cycle. 2012 marks one of the points of heightened activity. These solar storms have the potential to trigger any number of environmental events, such as more intense storm cells, volcanic eruptions etc. depending on the severity of the solar storms which hit Earth. The solar storms potential to greatly disrupt technology is just another thing we may have to look forward to... Let's just hope it doesn't somehow knock the lid off the Yellowstone Supervolcano Edit: Off, not of. Edited February 23, 2011 by Timonthy
ships-cat Posted February 23, 2011 #12 Share Posted February 23, 2011 Storm in a Teacup, more like. Everyone remember the chaos on 4th November, 2003 ? Remember all the disruption to telephones, the aircraft falling out of the sky, the volcano's and earthquakes ? The loss of agriculture and the subsequent famine ? The floods ? The Mutated Zombie Man-Eating Elephants with Lasers in their Foreheads ? No, neither do I. Perhaps that's because non of those things happened, despite it being the largest and most intense solar storm since records began. sheesh. meow purr
minimom Posted February 23, 2011 #13 Share Posted February 23, 2011 We have a farm,a well and an alternate power source. We're good to go! I can handle life without my kid's video games for a while.
d e v i c e Posted February 23, 2011 #14 Share Posted February 23, 2011 The guy who wrote the article has a real 'flare' for the sensational, I'll give him that. But in reality the solar storm will come and go and most people won't even notice.
realmcutter Posted February 23, 2011 #15 Share Posted February 23, 2011 is anyone else tired of people refering to big storms as "katrinas"? ill just wait for another gamma ray burst or for Yellowstone to erupt instead.
Lucky7 Posted February 23, 2011 #16 Share Posted February 23, 2011 There was a news story about this same thing several years ago... and nothing really happened. Yes, it is a potentially dangerous situation for Earth.. but there are alot of variables. Don't think there's much to worry about at this point. +DieChecker Posted February 23, 2011 #17 Share Posted February 23, 2011 There was just a bunch of hype about the last solar flare, that it was going to wipe out communcications, about 2 weeks ago. And...... NASA reported that not a single disruption event was reported. I think this is hype.
