'Mother Earth' to be given same rights as

52 posts in this topic

Bolivia is drawing up a draft UN treaty which would give Mother Earth the same rights as humans, including the right to life, to pure water and clean air.

The South American country wants the UN to recognize the Earth as a living entity that humans have sought to 'dominate and exploit'.

It aims to establish 11 new rights for nature which include: the right to life and to exist; the right to continue vital cycles and processes free from human alteration; the right to pure water and clean air; the right to balance; the right not to be polluted; and the right to not have cellular structure modified or genetically altered.

This will of course never pass as it would put limits on oil company activities, and military actions in the middle east and africa have made it plain that oil companies have a much larger say so than the puny UN.

well that's sort of interesting in an odd way... Would that then lead to taking the contents of the earth out of the earth as sort of an abortion issue? Would for sure screw with miners and drillers. Extremely sad that the UN feels this sort of measure is necessary to stop people from messing up the earth..

The right to clean air?

Why should the earth get better treatment than its inhabitants?

"Research suggests temperatures in the country have been rising steadily for 60 years and are on course to rise a further 3.5-4C over the next 100 years"

propaganda, not research

Actually, it's not THAT bad an idea.

If you are looking for some framework to promote/encourage responsible conservation of the earths resources, then treating earth as an 'individual' is no worse than any other method.

meow purr :)

The oil companies was the first thing that popped in my mind as well. If Mother Nature do have her rights, she can charge a lot of companies for rape.

People can't even respect the human rights of actual people. How do you expect them to respect the rights of a 'mother earth'? I just can't see it happening unfortunately.

This has the potential to become very very very bad...

The right o pure air and water?... who defines 'pure'? Who defines what constitutes 'impure'?...

"the right to continue vital cycles and processes free from human alteration"... Alteration to what degree?... planting crops is altering cycles and processes....

Are we supposed to just go back to living in small bands as nomadic gatherers of nuts and berries, letting billions die of starvation?

Again....This has the potential to become a very bad idea....

I like this idea, but I dont think it holds any water in reality. Good for Bolivia for standing up for what they believe in... bout time somebody in this world did. But first they need to start cleaning up in Bolivia, treat Gaia the way she deserves to be treated. Once Bolivia becomes an example of living in balance, then the world will listen.

What the.......? You don't make sense?! LOL

If the Earth gets clean Air then we get clean air... obviously. lol

If the Earth doesn't get better treatment then we are the ones that will suffer as well. lol

when the state elevates stones and trees above the rights of people, there is enormous potential for abuse (of people) by the state. will states move populations out of the country and into compact gettos to protect "mother earth".

OK so say this resolution gets passed. Now every living thing, being part of the earth, have human rights. Everything from cockroaches to elephants. You had better plan on becoming a vegan, like it or not, because once cows have the same rights as humans you certainly won't be able to have a hamburger. If you want to take it to it's logical outcome you really cant be a vegan either because plants are living beings. So if this passes and is followed to it's logical conclusion you will all starve.

I understand the need to respect nature and not to exploit it but I'm not so sure about the "human".

All life?
