Toy tiger sparks armed police alert in UK

27 posts in this topic

Police are today trying to trace the owner of a toy life-size tiger which sparked a major operation involving armed officers and a force helicopter.

The alert was raised by several members of the public yesterday afternoon when they spotted what they believed to be a live white tiger in a field near Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire.

The police helicopter was scrambled and a golf course cleared after police arrived at the scene and confirmed the sighting.

Armed police were called to the scene in case the animal came too close to members of the public.

Specialist staff from nearby Marwell Zoo also attended to advise and potentially tranquilise the wild animal.

A local golf course was evacuated and plans were put in place to close the nearby M27 motorway if necessary in case the tiger moved in that direction.

HA! That was funny. I can just imagine how embarrassed they must have felt when they realized they went through all that over a toy.

But they had a sense of humour about it anyways it seems.

Doesn't anybody own binoculars? Even without them, I'd think a few minutes of observation should have made it obvious this wasn't real... IMO

"Hey, Elroy? I think maybe that tiger ain't a real tiger. You wanna toss a few pebbles at him, or give him a poke with a stick, and see if he eats you or something?"

So, who wants to be that guy?

:P Well...you would think someone would have noticed that it didn't move an inch during all that time. Especially with all of the activity in the area, not to mention the helicopter flying overhead.

lmao I'm pretty certain that the lack of movement should have given it away.

Reminds me of the story of the man who walked around the side of his car in his carport to find a life sized stuff tiger, and thought that it was the real deal, so ran inside, called the police, pound and zoo, only to realize when they came that it wasn't even moving.

Well where can one get a stuffed skunk.I have a few place to set it.Nobody wants to go near one these to see if it is sleeping.Incidentally this tiger was close to my home. Such a toy would be quite expensive,so I guess many people will claim it

If this were in the US, it would have been shot without a question. Not saying that is good or bad... just say'n for say'n's sake.

Just say'n doesn't make it so. There are many animals that are captured and relocated in the US every year. Something as rare as a tiger definitely wouldn't have been shot unless people were in imminent danger and as a last resort.

Just think, these same people will be protecting you during a real security threat. It makes you feel good knowing what powers of discernment they have.

This story reminded me of this extremely hilarious police blotter:

"Police receive a report of a newborn infant found in a trash can. Upon investigation, officers discover it was only a burrito."

XD I can't read it without almost dying. I just get this awesome image in my head of police holding this frantic crowd back, and one officer coming out and saying "Folks! It's okay! It was only a burrito!"

I would seriously hope not. Can you imagine the international outrage and backlash that would course? The Tiger (especially White)is far to endangered to just "shot without question".

It's not hard to look around on here and find me talking about how close many Tiger species are to the point of no return. But white Tigers are not a subspecies of Tiger. Being white doesn't make it any more endangered than any other Tiger.
