Osprey Lady returns to Loch of the Lowes

38 posts in this topic

An osprey thought to be the UK's oldest breeding female has returned to its nest at a wildlife reserve in Perthshire.

The bird, known affectionately as Lady, has nested at the Loch of the Lowes reserve near Dunkeld for 22 consecutive years.

Ospreys live on average for 10-15 years in the wild.

Staff from the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) said they had once again "positively identified" the bird.

Emma Rawling, a ranger from the SWT, said staff were able to identify Lady due to her "distinctive iris and plumage".

Thanks EL. When I looked earlier the nestcam wasn't working.

It is now though 14:29 and you're right, she's not on the nest. Gone to catch a fish maybe! I have seen her tucking into one other days when I've looked.

Lady has just flown off and I can see 3 eggs in her nest now. Great!! B)

http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes/

btw for some reason the nestcam can't be viewed in the US, or maybe it's just parts of the US. A pest anyway as there was no problem with it whatsoever last year.

She's back on her nest again now :)

She's looking old, imo. Kinda skinny. :(

Here's the Squirrel Cam...

http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes2/

(not sure whether to start a new thread for squirrel cam)

She is looking very bedraggled at the moment, probably from all the rain.

There's a squirrel feeding, cute! ....I like squirrels :tu:

Was watching just now and the camera zoomed-in to her wee face... and scanned the nest. Never see it do that before. :)

According to their blog it says -

Our female ospreys behaviour changed this morning and as her breakfast arrived a few minutes ago, she was reluctant to take it from the male- when she finally stood up we saw why: the egg tooth of the first chick was clearly visible breaking through the shell. The process of hatching can take many hours, so this is just the first stage- but BRILLIANT NEWS! Stay tuned for more updates.

That's brilliant news! I've been watching her but it's hard to see what's happening with her egg -
