Titanic II to be built by 2016

40 posts in this topic

A fitting tribute or tempting fate ?

The replica of the ill-fated ship will be built at a Chinese shipyard and will sail on its maiden voyage accompanied by the Chinese navy.

It will be powered by diesel rather than coal but will otherwise follow design plans approved by a historical research team and, like its predecessor, will have 840 rooms and nine decks.

In the tried and true tradition of Apollo 13, I don't think this is a good idea. Naming things after disasters just seems to be unwise IMO. But, if they're going to do this...they need to have more life boats than the original.

I can see why it would be a good investment though, people will jump at the chance to sail on a replica of the Titanic.

I don't think it would be tempting fate ..But so many might think it will.....There will be a lot of mixed feelings about this ...

I say - Yes why not ? The technology they have today may make it more secure.. And they will have more life boats ect than ever before.. Well prepared this time round......To finally make the journey its sister couldn't make ....To complete the mission once and for all...and end well..I will give it a big fat - AYE ...

If I say no it's not a good idea.. I would be allowing my negative and superstitious side take over ....I like positive thinking ........Besides I would LOVE to be aboard a ship like that...

As long as they don't build it near my homeland - Belfast N.Ireland.like they did the first one..that might jinx them lol I seriously just kid on that.. lol

There are a couple of options see below ...

If you are all about positive thinking and always believing in chances, ... your motto is - If at first you don't succeed, try try again....then say - AYE

If you are a stick in the mud... everything is negative,... a real worry wart and cling too close to superstitions... then say - NAY !!

If you are not caring either way... your idea is - Build it, don't build it.. it don't matter.. Its his money he can do what he wants.. I don't care ...Then say - Sigh whatever !! lol :sleepy:

I read somewhere once he ( well I think it was him) had plans years ago to have it ready and set sail on time for 2012 to mark 100 years.. But he ran out of funds and other things fell through? Don't quote me on that...

Hate to tell you this but it's called publicity. Because he's announced he's going into politics.

I'm on board with this (no pun intended, lol).

I'm sure it will be outrageously expensive but if I could afford it, and I wasn't terrified of large bodies of water, I would definitely take a ride.

I would jump on that in a heartbeat! It would be even more fun if they had a night for period dress.

Having served in the Brit Merchant Navy a number of years and chatted to seamen Brit and Foreign all over the world.Every sailor I have talked to would not sail on a ship with the same name as one which had foundered. Extremely considered very bad luck, as sailors are very superstitious, its only about 100 years ago that they got over sailng on a Friday and if if was the 13th of the month Captains would not sail ,as they would have probably had to face a mutiny.Lots of modern day seamen still consider sailing on Friday 13th very unlucky..including Chinese who I have witnessed wearing a "lucky" charm around their necks..

I had actually thought of this a few years ago. But honestly, I don't know about this. Hopefully, this ship will be curse free.

Leaving superstition out of this for the moment, and if we can be sure that this shouldn't have been published on April 1st and is a month late, 3 years seems a rather optimistic delivery schedule for something of this size which would surely be very much a unique bespoke design, and Chinese shipyards have never ventured into the cruise ship market before, so that'd be a first in itself. Nevertheless, although I do think that all this Titanic memoribilia has all got a bit tacky, I'd actually welcome something like this, since modern cruise ships are just gigantic entertainment complexes; it'd be so nice to have something that looks like a ship once again.

Although of course that's often done with warships; look at Invinicble and Ark Royal, for instance. And a new Sheffield and Coventry were built to replace the ones lost in the Falklands. And one of the new carriers is going to be called Prince of Wales, isn't it..

Hi,Ref above, non of the R.N ships foundered ie:- went down through negligence or hit a rock etc,and of course the R.N is a bit old fashioned when it comes to thinking up new names. But would you get anyone volunteering to sail on a "Marie Celeste II "? I would like to see a proper ship again instead of a floating hotel to me they look obscene..Bristol built a replica"Matthew "and sailed it,but I wouldnt go on it as I consider it a fake, why ?,because it has an engine..cheers

Well, they did say the Chinese Navy would be escorting the ship - so at least they're prepared for the worst this time round. Of course, I hope the chinese aren't so busy tracking the Titanic II that they fail to notice the iceberg/s heading straight for THEM.

Yeah, I wouldn't even try to get on this boat. Maybe if it was on land, and it was a tour to see what the original titanic looked like, yeah, definatly. But since it's going to be at sea, no. I can only sense something bad coming from this project.

Shame that this is being made in China, which has a terrible history in manufacturing stuff.... Not to mention it has NO experience building cruisers. Furthermore it's considered bad luck to name a ship that has the words Titanic in it. So, I don't see this ending well, having the Chinese Navy isn't going to help. They going to be with it all the time until it's retired? Or is this an excuse to get into International waters and attack the countries? :o

You gotta start somewhere. Who knows, even though it's bad luck to name a ship "Titanic", it could be a big success. Don't count your chicken's before they hatch.
