Still Waters Posted May 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 5, 2012 This bug looks like it's made a killing carrying a remarkable number of dead bodies on its back to stop it becoming lunch. As this gruesome picture shows this insect has at least 20 ants on its back which according to scientists confuse potential predators like jumping spiders. The aptly named assassin bug uses the dead bodies, as a defence mechanism to fend off enemies http://www.dailymail...rd-enemies.html

Drev Posted May 5, 2012 #3 Share Posted May 5, 2012 So, what keeps the dead ants from falling of?
Panda124 Posted May 5, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 5, 2012 Haha. And I thought ants were good for nothing...
Alex44 Posted May 5, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 5, 2012 Good point on what keeps them on. I imagined the bug was like an expert at card houses, but with ants LOL but I guess it probably is more than that that huh.
The Silver Thong Posted May 5, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 5, 2012 So, what keeps the dead ants from falling of? Bug spit
Fluffybunny Posted May 5, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 5, 2012 I wonder if he noticed a vehicle driving down the road with a deer on the hood and got the idea from there...
Jacques Terreur Posted May 6, 2012 #8 Share Posted May 6, 2012 (edited) some spiders use ants' bodys too, but not to ward them off, but to infiltrate a colony and feed on them! They were photographed wearing dead ants' heads as frickin' HATS! http://myrmecos.net/...chilus-rogersi/ Edited May 6, 2012 by Jacques Terreur

CRIPTIC CHAMELEON Posted May 6, 2012 #10 Share Posted May 6, 2012 That's a good question Drev, maybe the spiny hair on the bug & ants help keep them in place, or they use some type of excreted enzyme, or both,? anyway great pics.
pallidin Posted May 6, 2012 #11 Share Posted May 6, 2012 How does it put the dead ants on its back? With its "legs" I presume, but a pile that high?
Shiloh17 Posted May 7, 2012 #12 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I think they are just cold, and wear the ants like a fur coat.
Emin Posted May 29, 2012 #13 Share Posted May 29, 2012 That sure is one very smart assassin bug.
ThickasaBrick Posted June 4, 2012 #14 Share Posted June 4, 2012 Just be glad ants aren't large enough to carry humans around. You wouldn't be sure if you were near an ant wearing "human" clothes.
