Why rock music 'brings out the animal in us'

3 posts in this topic

Rock music such as Jimi Hendrix-style electric guitar excites us because it recreates the sound of primal distress calls and "brings out the animal in us", scientists claim.

Sudden, jarring changes in pitch and frequency play on the same emotional mechanisms as the signals which animals use to alert one another of danger, a study found.

If one thinks hard enough, anything ranging from food, sex, sports, movies, music, competition, violence, reflex/involuntary actions, the work place, the boss, the relatives, the world around us, almost everything can seem to bring out the either the primitive side or the spiritual side of a human being. It's how we look at it, and how we interpret what's going on. Some discovery, that article.

Composers have intuitive knowledge of what sounds scary without knowing why. What they usually don't realise is that they're exploiting our evolved predispositions to get excited and have negative emotions when hearing certain sounds.

Yeah right. Terrorists don't hang out at rock concerts and similar places for inspiration, even though the "science correspondent" who wrote that article may imagine. The writer tactfully avoids any words portraying rock music in a positive light. It may be hard to believe, but music can also inspire and sometimes voice a message. Music can be an expression, same as any other art. What's sad is the fact that people don't get it. Even wannabe rocksters don't last, unless they have both the talent and the attitude and most importantly the respect for the music, no matter what genre it is or who created the music. Rock music is just a different flavor. The essence is the same as any.
