Lonesome George, the last La Pinta giant tortoise, dies in the Galapagos Islands

Lonesome George, the last remaining tortoise of his kind and a conservation icon, died on Sunday of unknown causes, the Galapagos National Park said. He was thought to be about 100 years old.

Lonesome George was found in 1972 and had become a symbol of Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, which attracted some 180,000 visitors last year.

Yep Timonthy, for once I can see the bright side of "cloning". So sad to see a whole species dissappear, and poor "lonesome George", I keep thinking of that song

"All by myself,

Don't wanna be

All by myself anymore

RIP Old fella.

Betcha there'll soon be a Country song written about George.

Wife left him, kids were idiots etc.

Well, there's no reason for Lonesome George to feel so lonely anymore. He's with the rest of his beloved clan now - on that big old giant tortoise island, up in the sky. :innocent: May your soul rest in peace George.

Rest in peace.

RIP George...

I have a client who always goes on about George (I think she might have met him once). God she is boring, our next encounter will now be boring with the added bonus of her being emotional, unless she does not know this yet...

Shall I tell her?

Couldn't they take some DNA from him and try to clone a turtle? Or is there not enough money in it to make it worth while?
