Poll Finds Americans Favor Ending Tax Cuts

questionmark

Recommended Posts

Americans in a national poll say by a 2-1 margin that ending the Bush-era tax cuts on annual earnings of $250,000 or more would help the economy, a position President Barack Obama has stressed in his campaign for another term.

The survey by the Pew Research Center released yesterday shows that 44 percent said the higher taxes would be beneficial, while 22 percent said such a move would harm it and 24 percent said there would be no effect.

Just goes to show how uninformed this country is. The numbers dont lie. Raising taxes will do nothing to help solve our debt problem. Nothing at all. This is like asking lions if its a good idea to let them in a farmers chicken coop.

Not only that, but for the folks making over 250,000 that own businesses, they are just gonna pass the cost on to the poor and middle class anyway. Its so sad that people think they are entitled to other peoples money. Especialy considering that money wont go to them at all, and will only go to pay a small part of the interest we owe our banksters.

This poll was taken of 1015 people... That is such a low percentage of the population you can't get a "real" number from a calculator.

This article has no value.

A poll that shows that most people think other people should pay more in taxes. Wow, that certainly is unexpected. NOT

Apparently you completely misunderstand statistics and polling.

It will reduce the deficit and debt. Both of which were caused by the Bush tax cuts in the first place.

Taxes on the rich does not mean entitlements. Our tax system is setup up for those most able to pay. Certainly the poor can't pay. And the middle class ability to pay taxes has also been reduced. As a rich person, you can whine about it all you want.

Neither of them was caused by the Bush tax cuts. See how easy it is to say anything. We have had a debt pretty much since the US Constitution was adopted.

Do you ever get tired of thinking that the only viable solution is to "Tax the Rich!!"? Maybe you should branch out to include "Spend Less!!" every once in a while.

Spending less would only hurt the needy and disabled. Raise the taxes on the rich to 90% and this will play a huge part in balancing our budget while continuing to support the safety net for the majority of Americans.

It will take a few years to balance the budget, and Obama is the only man that can do this. The savings alone from his Healthcare Law will reduce our total national debt by half in his second term.

If the rich rebel and close down factories and businesses, Obama will step in and "nationalize" the business that was closed, reopen it under Government control and start to turn this country into a "fair" and "compassionate" nation where everyone has a fair shot at a good income for those that want to work and not rely on the govt dole. Obama will give everyone the choice as to how they want to live in peace and harmony. If for some reason you don't want to work, or can't work, you will be forever secure in the knowledge that everyone will be able to live the American dream...life, liberty and the persuit of happiness.

Anyone that votes against Obama has only one reason...racism.

Sarcasm? It looks more like facts! Obama promised hope and change. After 4 years he has put us on the path to real equality and justice. He has given us hope that everyone will be equal in respect and income. When the rich start paying for their success everyone is lifted up.

Obama has changed how government is run. As president, the most powerful part of our govt., he can implement any policy he wants to; can congress? One man, one signature and the broken constitution that we have will be modified to account that we live in 2012, not 1776. Obama will force this country into the utopia that we all deserve.

If Romney wins, we go back to a piece of paper that is 236 years old, and very much out of date. We go back to the rich get richer and the poor are just simply ignored. If Obama wins, Greedy capitalism will be modified into social capitalism where the owners and managers make just a little more than the average employee.

You see Obama in action, we need 4 more years. It may be possible for Obama to sign another executive order giving him the right to hold the office of the president for as long as he is alive.

Our government was not intended to have one branch more powerful than the others. All three - Executive (president & cabinet), Legistlative (congress) and Judicial (court system) are intended to balance each other out via checks and balances in order to prevent any one branch from becoming more powerful than the others.

Obama has not changed how government has run, and he himself said Washington feels just as broken today as it did when he entered office.

Put down the Communist Manifesto, there's a reason the USSR failed. Every possible system can be exploited, communism and socialism are no exception.

Many have posted the picture/graph that shows precisely this. That our current ballooning of deficit and debt has as one of it's causes the Bush tax cuts. It appears in many threads here on UM. We're not talking about the historical genesis of deficit or debt but the current problems with it.

Actually, I have said repeatedly the DEMOCRATIC position which is to spend less and tax more. You'll find that in fact, the Obama government has spent less than most previous administrations, and will not allow the Bush tax cuts to continue any further.

In my opinion - the Bush Tax cuts should be repealed across the board, for all income levels.

In terms of doing it so that it has the least economic impact - repealing those tax cuts at the top and moving slowly down the income brackets makes most sense.

Im not even close to rich. I dont even think I qualify as middle class. Im lower middle class I guess

You could tax 100% of the income of every man women and child in this country, still wouldnt even come close to putting a dent in reducing our debt. Raising taxes on the rich, who already pay most taxes, will do nothing but drain even more of this countries wealth.

Why?

Here's a fun budget simulator for the US economy. If you spend a couple of minutes playing with it, it'll become quickly obvious, but the short answer is "because $4.53 Trillion of lost revenue over the next 10 years means that you need to enact some fairly serious budget cuts elsewhere".

Hmm, thats interesting Tiggs. I couldnt get past the first section of cuts though. I thought all the options were bad. So bad, I couldnt see how I could possibly balance the budget being so restrained. Also, I might have missed it, but I couldnt find anywhere to add in the interest payments we have to pay on a 14 (from what I understand the real debt number is 16, some say its WAY higher then that) trillion dollars. It isnt really possible to pay this debt, and maintain anywhere near the same standard of living. NTM its not like we are cutting anything, and I doubt there is a person here on UM that would say the government would be responcible with the increase tax revenue on either side of the coin.

NTM this is the worst possible time to increase taxes on anyone. These people are already running for cover. Not hireing, not taken out loans, not doing anything this country needs them to do inorder for us to grow the economy. What do you think they are going to do when you increase thier taxes? We are losing companies left and right as we speak at record pace to countries overseas. There will be many who might have stayed that will bounce.

There is a perfect economic storm building on a global level, and this will only fuel it more.

and my challenge to all is to show me where to cut legally (because you cannot cut entitlements).

If anyone wants to pay higher taxes, go ahead. Leave me out of it. The majority of those who have to pay these higher taxes aren't responsible for creating the deficit. Why not make the spend thrifts in charge cover their own losses for a change?

The interest payments are already built into the calculator. All of the good choices - the low-hanging non-partisan stuff - has already been eaten by Congress.

It isnt really possible to pay this debt, and maintain anywhere near the same standard of living. NTM its not like we are cutting anything, and I doubt there is a person here on UM that would say the government would be responcible with the increase tax revenue on either side of the coin.

Well - with the current Congress gridlock - it's not like anyone is spending much more of anything.

I think that it is possible to pay back the current debt and maintain the same standard of living - providing the economy can be kick-started back into life, followed by the gradual repeal of the Bush Tax cuts.

NTM this is the worst possible time to increase taxes on anyone. These people are already running for cover. I agree that raising taxes on anyone during a slump is generally a bad thing, as it'll just slow economic growth.

Presumably, the Democrats are doing this for political election year reasons. or maybe it's a twofer, and they really do think that the underlying economy is now strong enough to take it.

Oh come on... even the hardest left wing Dems can't be that far removed from reality.

I'd probably have to do some research on this, but considering that we are TRILLIONS in debt (a number so large literally can't imagine it), as someone else said, I doubt if it would barely make a dent in even our interest payments, let alone the whole debt.
