Has anyone given an explanation as to why these creatures suddenly appear out of the depths and mass together ?,or is it a natural occurence at this time of year ?.

They're very beautiful, but doesn't their light attract predators? Or can they "switch it off" when they need to?

It's in the article .They come to the surface for various reasons .I think them washing up on the shore is a natural seasonal thing .Nothing mysterious . Part of the life cycle .
