Thousands of otherwise healthy people put up with a level of sleep deprivation that would drive the rest of us insane.

But they are not the usual candidates for insomnia, such as shift workers or those with severe mental illness.

Instead, they belong to a newly identified group of people born without the ‘comfort’ genes needed for easy sleep.

Both my dad and I can't sleep at night, we get only a few hours. This gene seems very possible.

My mom and dad ,slept just fine .I've been nocturnal since I'm a child . Like a goofy little owl from the time I was 4 . Then I was always tired in school .

My mom would tell the teachers,she just can't sleep at night .

In Chinese medical terms,it actually means I have an issue with my yin and yang balance .

Yang is day time,yin is night time .

So my yang is out of balance,and has been ,my entire life . its possible this is normal for some,but I doubt it .

Actual sleep deprivation is all about stress and over thinking .

Again,in Chinese medical terms ,this turns into an issue with the spleen .

Treat the spleen ,and usually liver land kidney ,secondarily ,and sleep issues get better .

I don't know if I believe this to be a defect...

It seems more like an ativism, a characteristic left over from a previous ancestor, so in a sense inherited.

Mammals, even primates were once nocturnal, sleeping in the day and forging/hunting for food at night. Since then a switch was made encouraging them, and us, to sleep at night instead.

The inability to sleep at night might be a left over behaviour.

It's modern society which demands everyone adapt to daytime wakefulness. Would so many people with insomnia find it a problem if we changed some of our habits? Probably not. If your mind and body is encouraging daytime-sleeping it doesn't seem right for society to punish you.

i dont usually have problems with insomnia cuz im usually tired out from play to much games or doing to much homework and i sleep at 12:00 and wake up at 7:00 but i stll feel refreshed

For the past 5 years iv'e been a nightshift worker sleeping only about 4 hours per day and then having a catch up nap on saturdays, but prior to this and begining from about 12 years old i would stay up nearly all night reading books and magazine (lol the 90's had no internet to watch porn... ooops um read stuff on) i think the body's carcadium rythym is easy to break and once broken it doesnt return to normal, iv'e tried and tried to get up early and force myself to stay awake all day but it only takes 1 or 2 days and i will just re-energise and stay awake all night
